United States v Costa Rica Friendly - Gamethread

ESPN has the game at 8PM Pacific Time as long as the tennis match ends when it is supposed to do so. Today's friendly result doesn't matter but for the United States it is round two of the Jurgen Klinsmen experiment as he continues to test out new players in the field, particularly looking for a forward that can have a break out performance and become the future.

If you had the impression that this is a young set of call-ups, that is because it is. Even without Freddy Adu, the selection list features 6 players who could be in next years London Olympics, and most of the youth is from MLS. The forward set (this includes Landon Donovan who will likely be a CAM though) averages merely 22.25 years old. Remove the Galaxy leader and it is only 20. The midfield is 25 with Brek Shea potentially both a senior and Olympian. Like most rosters around the world the defense (26.375) and the keepers (26) are older, but both also have potential U-23s for 2012.

So yes, part of this is about Jurgen Klinsman and the current Senior team, but another part of it is discovering who is going to be ready in 3 years for the real deal, and probably coming up through the Olympics, World Cup Qualifying and the next Gold Cup all together. Brazil 2014 will be a new era and not just because of the coach.

This is your gamethread for the USA v Costa Rica at the Home Depot Center.

US Soccer is reporting this lineup as a 4-3-3

Howard; Chandler, Orozco Fiscal, Bocanegra ©, Castillo; Donovan, Edu, Torres; Rogers, Altidore, Shea

Klinsman already said that he’d have Donovan in the #10.

I'd almost expect this to play like a 4-1-4-1

Edu as CDM

Donovan and Torres as the central two, with Torres more CMish.

some are seeing 4-1-3-1-1 (That's the Arrow)

The determinant will be how far back Donovan gets defensively.

No Herediano players starting for Costa Rica

I think the backup keeper is from herediano though

Phil Lahm

The Caymans and bookmakers across Europe have this game at a huge 2.3/1 on the money line for an outright win for the USMNT and they are even 1/1.6 favored by more than one goal on the spread.

Look for a 3-1 victory where Juergen can’t wait to release the hounds at any defense he faces.

If you read German Captain Phil Lahm’s book recently that has been causing an uproar in the German Soccer World, his quotes on Klinsmann at Bayern Munich and as coach of the German National Team was that the practices were haphazard and unorganized. Fitness drills, he said, made up the entirety of the routine, without tactical discussion or strategy of any sort. Players were in a panic, meeting privately before games to devise some sort of strategy.

I think Klinsmann truly is this sort of balls to the wall, purist that says tactics be damned. He truly feels Soccer is almost more a mental game than a physical game, and he thinks if the boys just literally have at it, throwing caution to the wind and any strategy, they have there best chance to play at the top level.

We shall see if this let them loose and tell them to shoot strategy will be remotely successful in a league where the talent set is different than a random group of German or International Stars.

by RalfZakuani on Sep 2, 2011 7:51 PM PDT reply actions

Aren't tactics mental, not physical?

But he does have that kind of traditional English mindset

of effort and attitude being more important than tactics and strategy. He does at least mix in some technique on the ball.

tactics in the sense that

Jurgen apparently isnt a fan of game film, adapting the shape or content of his lineup to opponents, tailoring practices to the task at hand, or really in any way treating soccer as some sort of geometry, ordered system, spatial concern at all. The way he view the game sort of disregards any tactics, as his vision of proper play sees above such physicaly, spatial characteristics and has almost a supernatural quality to it. He wills it without much concrete to show in the way how this will might be applied in a given instance. It’s quite sucesfull. If you’ve ever seen him talk, even in English, like on ESPN last summer during world cup, you can tell the guy is almost like a preacher of sorts. He’s got a sort of confident charisma that suggests he’s seeing the soccer pitch through different eyes.

I'm not liking this game

Costa Rica is already getting pretty chippy/reckless on some of these challenges. I don’t want another Stuart Holden type injury.

Though maybe Landon could get nicked up a bit and be out for a few games

He'd just been too physical knocking the defender down

and though the blow wasn’t to the head, he did push at the keeper. And then pushed at more players. He didn’t need to do that.
