2012 MLS Draft - Live Thread

MLS teams gather in Kansas City to draft from their selection of college seniors, Generation Adidas players and a few pre-signed internationals. You can watch live on ESPN2/3 or MLSSoccer.com at 9 AM or just follow along here. MLSSoccer.com's final mock draft (their third) has Puget Sound native Kelyn Rowe going as high as third or as low as 14th. Their expectations are for Seattle Sounders FC to select three different players at pick 15 - Dom Dwyer, Ethan Finlay or Babayele Sodade. Pick 34, even harder to predict, sees differing selections for the Sounders as well - Jacob Hustedt, Miguel Ibarra or Eder Arreola. Dwyer and UW leftback Jamie Finch were Seattle's selection's in the SB Nation Mock Draft. The only other Seattle native at the combine, keeper Chris Blais, is not expected to be drafted today.

It is important to remember that Seattle sees 10 or 11 players that they like. Last year they had a similar narrow list drafting several in the second round, including a Generation Adidas player. Seattle's board received very little adjustment based on the Combine, but other teams don't necessarily follow that practice.

As soon as Hanauer & Co do something, draft or trade, an immediate snapshot reaction will be posted in its own story. The team will have the brain trust and any players drafted today on a conference call and we'll have a report based on those as well.

Lastly, here's a reminder of team needs according to Sigi Schmid; depth everywhere but keeper. There are currently three unclaimed roster slots, but the team expects competition throughout the roster. This includes the opportunity of a non-drafted invitee making the roster.

Not that I've heard.

Marsh said they’d decided on their pick, which suggests they maybe aren’t trading the number 1, but I wouldn’t believe anything you hear from any front office member just yet.

If you have the number one and haven't decided

you should deal the pick. They had all year and can’t choose?

Wenger/Mattocks

Pretty much a lock at 1st?

Also you bring a good point. Marsch and Co. seem to have made some weird picks, but also done some great trades (Riley pick, trade to Chivas for Braun for example) so I can’t make up my mind about how things are going. But not having the first pick figured out yet seems kind of ridiculous.

by chrisperry1983 on Jan 12, 2012 8:18 AM PST up reply actions

Well you certainly don't want to make it known that you've dealt the pick this early.

I would imagine you’d want to leave the door open for somebody to knock your socks off with a trade offer at the eleventh hour.

One thing I liked about East Coast draft

was how the density of teams meant that several supporters groups had strong representation. Although I did think it was funny that the Sons of Ben left early…

Since Sounders joined it’s also seen Philly, Baltimore, St Louis. Of course New York hosted many times.

If the Sounders keep 15th pick

Depending on who’s available, a darkhorse pick would be Andy Rose. Six ft. two in. DM from UCLA.

Not a surprise

With lack of Red Bulls contingent at combine (no Backe), and Cooper falling out (or down) of favor with Spencer this was bound to happen.
I imagine the first rounder is for 2013 though because NY traded this year’s first for DeRo.
Also, losing more allocation is not good for NY unless they deal Henry or Marquez. If not, what does this mean for Agudelo’s development and playing time?

by James Bray on Jan 12, 2012 8:49 AM PST via Android app up reply actions

LOL

so your saying the timbers are gonna conceded the Cascadia Cup with out playing a single rivalry game this year?

by gstommylee on Jan 12, 2012 8:50 AM PST up reply actions

Wow

Ives reporting that it was between 200-300k in allocation. That alone would be a lot but with a 2013 pick too. I realize Cooper is good but, in fairness, that is a great deal for our southern neighbors.

by @Thomas513 on Jan 12, 2012 8:53 AM PST up reply actions

That Backe didn’t realize the Gold Cup was happening blows my mind.

Good Deal for the cinders

That is a steal. I’m guessing the Red Bulls have a deal set up for agudelo but still 200k in allocation dollars for Cooper is insane.

Would Agudelo upgrade our 2d striker?

He seems like he has a ton of potential and does well when playing but has not played much.

by @Thomas513 on Jan 12, 2012 8:54 AM PST up reply actions

What

forward spot does Agudelo usually play?

by gstommylee on Jan 12, 2012 8:56 AM PST up reply actions

On the bench.

That is the problem. I don’t know otherwise what is bet spot is.

by @Thomas513 on Jan 12, 2012 8:58 AM PST up reply actions

NY

is selling him then?

by gstommylee on Jan 12, 2012 8:59 AM PST up reply actions

That would make $200-300k for Cooper

A little easier to swallow. That will get several million for Agudelo if he goes abroad.

by @Thomas513 on Jan 12, 2012 9:00 AM PST up reply actions

If Ream deal goes through

They would also be getting a ton of allocation $ as i think he’s reported between $2.5-3.5m. If both Ream and Agudelo deals go through NY will have a $1.3m in allocation, that’s a lot of breathing room.

by wedjee on Jan 12, 2012 9:03 AM PST up reply actions

Remember competative fairness in MLS

Our front office all ready does the scouting that gives our international signings an extremely higher success rate then the other teams. In order to continue that great success the MLS makes us sign an agreement that says we have to use our late first round draft picks on guys that don’t make sense.

Hey 3 left backs and none that really stands out, lets use our first rounder to throw a rookie in that situation, after using our first pick last year to draft a rookie at left back.

I don’t mean to be all negative or nothing, but we always draft super weirdly. If Zakuani hadn’t been such a no-brainer, I’m sure we would have come from way out in left field there too. It is what it is. We’ve had immense success without drafting very well. I think we are going to be fine if that continues, although drafting well could vault us over the top. Still, I can live with random picks.

Boo! Tomorrow AM. I want all things now!

Last season was a knock-it-out-of-the-park draft

Four players stuck with the team with one GA and one who played plenty of minutes. All with 2nd round picks. That’s a great draft. For some reason I think Sigi and company do better in the 2nd round rather than the first.

by 253Sounder on Jan 12, 2012 10:25 AM PST up reply actions

2011 has a chance to be great long term. But we only kept 2 of the 4 we drafted in the 2nd round. Meredith came back on after he lost to Josh Ford and Boss was forced out with concussions. Tetteh is still a major work in progress. If he develops, then we did well, if he turns into Montano, lots of promise but not much to show for it, then I fail to see how we did all that well.

Boo! Tomorrow AM. I want all things now!

by Perrinbar on Jan 12, 2012 10:32 AM PST up reply actions

I don't think it is fair to say that the Sounders don't draft well.

Their 2009 draft was a clear success, and 2011 looks pretty good (although it is far to early to say).

by quacker27 on Jan 12, 2012 10:24 AM PST up reply actions

The 2009 draft looks a success because of Zak. If you take him out of the equation it’s not as clearly successful. At that point it’s all about Fucito, who I love, but I think that was anomalous. As for 2011, it’s ripe with potential, but Carrasco is the only solid one from that year in terms of production so far. I’m just saying that we draft… oddly.

Now Dave, all I’m saying is, we’ve rarely drafted impact players, with the exception of Zakuani in year 1. That’s all. When you see some of the names that came through the draft, it’s just unfortunate we’ve never managed to grab one. We could definitely be drafting worse. But I don’t think you can reasonably claim we couldn’t draft better.

Boo! Tomorrow AM. I want all things now!

by Perrinbar on Jan 12, 2012 10:34 AM PST up reply actions

And, more to the point, even when we make good picks, Fucito and Carrasco, people are super confused by them. We just draft differently, that’s all.

Boo! Tomorrow AM. I want all things now!

by Perrinbar on Jan 12, 2012 10:35 AM PST up reply actions

Everyone rarely drafts impact players.

The MLS draft is like the 4th most important way to add talent.

by Aaron Campeau on Jan 12, 2012 10:35 AM PST up reply actions

Which is why I don’t really care that much. And why we’ve been successful. Somehow this got turned around from my intent. Original point intended to = “Sounders make peculiar draft choices frequently, hasn’t really seemed to be a problem, thus I just roll with it.”

Boo! Tomorrow AM. I want all things now!

by Perrinbar on Jan 12, 2012 10:38 AM PST up reply actions

Since the draft is random chance

then if Zakuani doesn’t recover to the same level, we will be the worst drafting team in MLS.

Yep out of all our draft picks in the last three years only 2 of them played more then 900 minutes in MLS competition. Fucito and Carrasco, technically that’s two and neither of them are starters. Ianni was a draft day trade, so someone else all ready made the pick for them.

by python6114 on Jan 12, 2012 10:41 AM PST up reply actions

Defensive needs and Duran

My feeling is that this definitely looks like a needs based pick. We need more options on the back line. Depending on how things pan out we could certainly have a defending deficit by the end of the season. Duran will be one more potential option that is available to us after he has had time to play in the Reserve League games and acclimate to the leagues speed and style of play.

of all the positions on the field...

…CB and RB are spots on this team where a promising youngster could readily push for time in a backup capacity. From a depth perspective, the Duran pick fits the context well even if it’s fairly unsexy.

by nimajneb on Jan 12, 2012 10:27 AM PST reply actions

LB

is not exactly easy spot to fill and Seattle would probably have to look outside the league to do that.

by gstommylee on Jan 12, 2012 10:32 AM PST up reply actions

no, not LB...

…since Leo is the starter, Burch was signed/acquired specifically to be the backup, and Tetteh could still conceivably push for backup time. Drafting a promising left back would have been a strong indicator against continuing trying the Tetteh in defense experiment.

At RB, Scott is a competent “situational” backup, but you don’t want to be forced to play him there from a matchup perspective.

by nimajneb on Jan 12, 2012 10:34 AM PST up reply actions

Well sure, but we have recent signings to address RB

I know we have people on the roster to play LB, but it certainly doesn’t feel “locked” to me.

I think Scott is actually pretty good at RB as well.

by Kingdomer on Jan 12, 2012 10:36 AM PST up reply actions

Johanssen is the starter...

Sivabaek is a midfielder, and Scott is not a good MLS RB.

by nimajneb on Jan 12, 2012 10:38 AM PST up reply actions

hence my use of the present tense :-)

I’d be perfectly fine with Sivebaek serving in a RB backup role with the Sounders, but the evidence is not clearly there to declare that to be his role over here. If it is, Duran would probably have to be explained as a CB depth pick.

by nimajneb on Jan 12, 2012 10:46 AM PST up reply actions

Which, honestly I'm fine with

I think we are pretty thin at “true” CBs and injuries could really weaken the back line in front of a brand new GK.

by Kingdomer on Jan 12, 2012 10:47 AM PST up reply actions

it's a reasonable approach...

… but with Hurtado/Parke/Ianni/Scott around I would have REALLY preferred taking, say, Martinez instead of going after CB depth…. the RB story just makes the pick that much more palatable.

by nimajneb on Jan 12, 2012 10:52 AM PST up reply actions

That we can both agree on.

I thought Martinez was the absolute no-brainer there.

by Kingdomer on Jan 12, 2012 10:52 AM PST up reply actions

I know Sivabaek wants to play MF

But the majority of his minutes in his club career have been spent at RB.

by Kingdomer on Jan 12, 2012 10:40 AM PST up reply actions

but then, what was he signed to be?

I agree if they brought him in with the understanding that he would be backing up RB then the depth question there is not as significant as at forward or LB (depending on what you call Tetteh), but since his departure was rumored to be caused in part by positional dissatisfaction…

by nimajneb on Jan 12, 2012 10:44 AM PST up reply actions

I believe he was signed to play RB

Which is why my initial comment was intended to raise the question that LB is our greatest need, or rather greatest opportunity for upgrade.

by Kingdomer on Jan 12, 2012 10:46 AM PST up reply actions

personally...

…I’m not a big fan of Burch, so in some ways I’m inclined to agree. But apparently the team sees enough in him to commit to him as a backup.

by nimajneb on Jan 12, 2012 10:49 AM PST up reply actions

I hear ya

And I don’t dislike Gonzalez, or Burch for that matter. But I guess my larger point was there was a young, healthy, GA guy who played that position who was available. Hence my confusion.

by Kingdomer on Jan 12, 2012 10:51 AM PST up reply actions

Maybe Tetteh is futher along than we know

I like Martinez but he’s more of an CAM and we don’t play with one. The last GA FWD was Dwyer and we needed more of a TF. I like the pick, even though I was hoping for the sexy pick. I trust the FO and the scouts. They wanted a CB and Duran wouldn’t have been there at their 2nd pick. Im ok with it.

by Colin Johnson on Jan 12, 2012 10:36 AM PST reply actions

I like Kohei Yamada

He’s a midfielder, but showed some good creativity and passing. RJ Allen (RB) is also still available. Anyone else like y’all like for the Sounders in the 2nd round?

just got off call.

He started as CM, moved to CB with a tiny bit of RB

A CB alternative to Ianni?

I feel that this pick also reflects on Ianni’s quality of play last year, or lack of it. After how well he played filling in for Hurtado in 2010 I was very disappointed in how he played in 2011. Assuming the FO feels the same way, I think this pick reflects their desire to have alternatives available if Ianni continues to under perform.

15 picks after the Sounders, some other team also picked someone that no one is heard of, but I expect that in the 2nd round, that’s the gambling round.

I could have sworn you said

that 7 of the Sounders dratees are still making the team. With a number like that it’s hard for me to believe that only 7-10 draftees make it a year. Unless our definition of “make it” is way different.

Not to go OT, but HUGE changes to CCL starting in 2012-13.

Announcement here.

Summarized: eight groups of three teams each, eliminating the initial knockout stage. That reduces travel and fixture congestion both. Waiting to see how it’s implemented, but I am cautiously optimistic.

by Aaron Campeau on Jan 12, 2012 12:07 PM PST reply actions

Only group winners advance

That’s a bit scary

"It's scintillating, it's sensational, it's Seattle Sounders FC soccer."

by LoiteringWithIntent on Jan 12, 2012 12:11 PM PST up reply actions

Its

not like its 8 groups of 4 where only the winner moves on.

by gstommylee on Jan 12, 2012 12:13 PM PST up reply actions

So

am i reading it right that US club vs Mexican club won’t happen in group stage?

by gstommylee on Jan 12, 2012 12:11 PM PST up reply actions

I don't think so.

tHe top two US and Mexican teams won’t face each other, but the second two US/Mexican teams likely will face a higher ranked team from the other country.

by quacker27 on Jan 12, 2012 12:12 PM PST up reply actions

Actually, I read that wrong; there will DEFINATELY be 2 US vs. MEX match ups

since there can’t be two clubs from the same country in the same group.

by quacker27 on Jan 12, 2012 12:15 PM PST up reply actions

but

if there’s 8 group would it possible for the US teams not to be in a group with a Mexican side.

by gstommylee on Jan 12, 2012 12:17 PM PST up reply actions

I guess

its a wait and see till the draw happens.

by gstommylee on Jan 12, 2012 12:19 PM PST up reply actions

Um.

From the link above: "No team will face another club from the same country in the group stage – except in the case of a reallocated or “wild card” berth, and each group will contain either a Mexican or U.S. club."

So given that there are only 8 clubs total from the US and Mexico in the draft, doesn’t that mean there won’t be any pools which contain teams from both countries?

by Kenneth Jung on Jan 12, 2012 12:24 PM PST up reply actions

It says that each group will contain a US or Mex side,

So with 4 Mex qualifiers and 4 US qualifiers and 8 groups.

No Mex with US in the group stage.

Should actually help the MLS teams get to the quarters. Plus it results in less games in the group stage, thus less travel. Sounds like a win win.

by MurrayD on Jan 12, 2012 12:25 PM PST up reply actions

by agtk on Jan 12, 2012 12:24 PM PST up reply actions

Wouldn't

we be a top seed group regardless of the charge since we qualified for group stage as 2nd best MLS team.

by gstommylee on Jan 12, 2012 12:27 PM PST up reply actions

That's what it looks like to me

I like these changes; we should be the favorites in our group.

by Miki Turner on Jan 12, 2012 12:29 PM PST up reply actions

That is true

But it really is not that different from being favorites for the second spot in the previous format.

by AAAA on Jan 12, 2012 12:40 PM PST up reply actions

That's how I read it

And it sounds like there will be no Mexican side in our group either.

by Miki Turner on Jan 12, 2012 12:28 PM PST up reply actions

I cannot see it that way

It does not improve our chance of qualifying. I actually think that getting to the top two when a Mexican team is included in four-team group might be easier than winning a three-team group that does not have a Maxican team.

Not playing competitive matches against Mexican teams is a loss for us and MLS as a whole. Playing competitively against superior teams is a great way of improving the team and individual players. Playing against Mexican teams has also been a good measuring stick for MLS.

by AAAA on Jan 12, 2012 12:44 PM PST up reply actions

That may

be a drawback but having to play 2-4 less games is big especially on the travel.

by gstommylee on Jan 12, 2012 12:56 PM PST up reply actions

Doing away with CCL would be even bigger

I hate how this reduces the prestige of the tournament.

The next natural step will be to revert back to the Champions’ Cup format (only 8 teams, equivalent to the current Championship Round).

by AAAA on Jan 12, 2012 1:17 PM PST up reply actions

it means being seeded first

facing weaker two teams, as opposed to a team nominally better and one weaker.
