Who Are You Watching in the Supplemental Draft?

I'm not a professional evaluator of talent nor a scout, nor do I pretend to be. However, the guys below all caught my eye, either in press from knowledgeable sources, or during the combine matches I watched.

As a point of reference, the Sounders hold picks 33, 34, 53, and 72.

Is there an eye-catching player who will fall that far?

Is there a player left who merits trading up?

Is there a less-deep team who would be interested in, for example, most of/all of our picks in exchange for one earlier pick?

*****************************************************************************

Miguel Ibarra, UC Irvine, MF, 5-7 135

One mock draft had the Sounders picking him in the second round. Another reputable mock had him going in round one. The big knock on him is obviously his size (to put it in perspective, Le Toux is 6'0, 155). However, he has great speed and skill.

The following three were all in the discussion when the GA roster was being named. I know less about each of them, but they all went pretty early in a mock or two pre-combine:

Carlos Alvarez, Connecticut, F, 5-10 160

Eric Schoenle, West Virginia , D, 6-2 147

Taylor Kemp, Maryland, D, 5-11 153

No international players were drafted in the first two rounds. I am certain that this was at least mildly embarrassing to Don G. and the boys. I am not, however, surprised. Each team has only 8 intl (before trades), and they are reticent to use one of them AND a super draft pick on an unproven player. With that said, a Supplemental Pick and an international slot is a (much?) lesser price. The following international players all showed well at the combine or have good pedigree/press.

Kohei Yamada MF

Yamada in particular showed a real spark of genius and really seemed to see the field well. I would love to see him in Rave Green.

Jason Banton MF

Has a lot of training time with top EPL teams on his resume. On the other hand, never stuck with any of them and is in the MLS Draft. He's probably a better gamble than John Rooney was though...and, despite the bouncing around, he's just 19.

Aldo Paniagua MF

Six foot 22-year-old Paraguayan who showed pretty well at the combine.

Who do you guys like from the remaining players? Is there anyone eye-catching who you would like to see in training?

I'm probably most intrigued by Ibarra

In that he’s SoCal so there’s a Schmid familiarity but he’s definately a “high” midfielder. Not a box to box type, so he may not fit.

The danger with the draftable internationals is that they are signed to MLS contracts already. They don’t fight for a roster spot. There are a roster spot.

They could be cut,though, right?

I liked Yamada for the bit Ive seen but if he couldnt be cut if picked, thats a problem.

Seems spelled out in the rules pretty clearly

At first glance of the rules, we see that it is okay to waive a player who was drafted and not offered a contract. So for now, the non-GA and non-International draftees of the MLS are all in that camp.

(H) WAIVERS

(v) A player who was drafted in the SuperDraft or supplemental draft, and who after a trial with the club is not offered a contract by the first Monday of June.
However, as Dave puts it Yamada is essentially under contract with MLS. So if you look a little lower down on the roster rules it may explain why no internationals have been drafted, yet…
(III.) METHODS OF RELEASING PLAYERS
A) WAIVERS Teams may waive players based on performance at any time during the MLS season. Players with guaranteed contracts will continue to have their salary budget charge applied to the team salary budget, subject to any settlement… Any settlement amount will be charged to the team’s salary budget.
That appears to mean the team that drafts Yamada, or any other player already under contract with MLS, commits to him and his contract. And even if they then cut him it will count against the team’s salary. Here are the complete roster rules.

Wow

That kinda sucks. I can’t see many teams taking a chance on the internationals with those kind of rules.

Joao Plata was one of these. Gems can be found anywhere and risk is part of the game.

Guaranteed Contracts

MLS didn’t even have guaranteed contracts until the latest CBA, and even now they are only for players with 4 or more years of league tenure. We can waive them without repercussions. The big knock seems to be that they take up an International slot without being markedly better than most American college players, and the fact that teams have had barely any time to scout them.

And in the 1st round of the 2012 Supplemental Draft the Seattle Sounders select...

… Sammy Ochoa.

I agree with your assessment of some of the intriguing players still on the board. I doubt any of them will still be available in the second round of Tuesday’s supplemental draft. But I’m OK with that. None of these players fits the Sounders’ needs or would compete for starting minutes. Ochoa is likely to start the season as Montero’s partner up top. For my money Ochoa was the steal of the Supplemental Draft.

Of the players you’ve listed the one who is most likely to have an impact for the right team in 2012 is Paniagua. He will fit as a wing on a team that needs one and could compete for minutes in the right situation. I do like Yamada and Ibarra for the Sounders but doubt that they will have a shot at either barring a trade.

Gaschk has some basic biographical data on players left

Defenders/Keepers & Mids/Forwards
RJ Allen, Shawn Singh, Karo Okiomah, Michael Green, Kirk Urso all intrigue me.

And maybe any of the internationals.

The two that are most interesting are RJ Allen and Yamada

RJ Allen is probably the best natural RB in the draft (which isn’t saying much) and I think we could still use depth there. Yamada was far and away the best of the internationals at the combine. I probably wouldn’t draft either if they have a guaranteed contract.

Wings and DMs

Most of the remaining players who have garnered public attention play either wing or defensive CM. A couple of other players that had their moments at the Combine were Evan James, Luke Holmes and Eder Arreola. James had moments of individual brilliance at the combine, but didn’t seem to connect well. He shined when he did something individual. Holmes was the opposite. He played well as the interim link between Yamada and Finlay during Finlay’s hat trick game. He made intelligent runs, showed decent vision and good service. Arreola also had his moments.

Of the 3, my preference was for Holmes. Consumate team play at least in the Combine. Might be an interesting player to take a flyer on if he’s available when the Sounders pick.

Another thing to remember is that the Sounders will get to select two players when it is time for them to pick. This changes the dynamic a bit.

Supplemental picks for the future

Matt Grasch interviewed Sigi about the Supplemental Draft and Sigi had an interesting observation about the Sounders’ approach. Due to the depth of the current squad, the chances of a Supplemental pick sticking with the team are long. But the team is looking to select players with an eye toward potentially helping them develop in a lower league and then come back in the future with the Sounders. It is something that gets talked about periodically, but I found it telling that Sigi mentioned it in an interview for the Sounders’ own site.

College protected list

lasts two seasons and has up to 6 players if memory serves.

This year Seattle loses rights to Jamel Wallace.

Seattle seemed to cool on Wallace pretty fast

He hasn’t been in the Sounders orbit in a while, AFAIK. I don’t see losing his rights as much of a loss.

We he started the last season injured

and was on a team across the country.

MLS Top Players Available list heavy on Internationals

Found it interesting that the league’s website list of top players available for the Supplemental Draft was very International player heavy. Half the players they listed in their Top 10 are International invitees.

Yes, some of these players are worthy candidates, but their list feels more like a response to the invited internationals not getting chosen in the Super Draft than an honest assessment of the remaining skill players available.
