For those who think the biggest problem with the Seattle Sounders is grass. Ok, maybe just the founder of the site thinks that.

I'd love grass for the Clink

I think throwing the Seahawks and Mike Holmgren under the bus to do it is not the best way to go about it. He may have liked the turf more but its not like there were any professional soccer games being played at Qwest field at the time. He hasn’t even been here since the Sounders moved to MLS. The Sounders have benefited so much from their relationship from the Seahawks, I don’t understand the feeling that they are some how holding the Sounders back.

I’d love to know what signings the Sounders haven’t made because of the field type. Prince Tagoe is sited as a possible example but if I remember correctly it was because the team that was going to sell him to use ran into a rash of injuries at the forward position and he wanted a boat load of cash.

Furthermore, Fieldturf all over the world is given a Fifa 2 star rating including the new stadium in Vancouver. I have no doubt that the new stuff they put in is going to 2 star as well. I guess I just find it a little preposterous that the Sounders lack of post season success is being blamed on the type of pitch they play on. If/When we do get a grass field I really hope that it doesn’t turn into Soldier Field in Chicago.

Again, I think installing grass would be great, but I really don’t like the way this person/group is trying to go about it.

FieldTurf is in many cases safer than natural grass

At least that’s the conclusion on this 3-year study following college football. I got access to PubMed, and skimmed the article a little more in detail. They show that, when compared to natural grass, FieldTurf has:

  • Less injury time loss
  • Less injury incidences regardless of:
    • severity levels (i.e. minor, substantial, severe)
    • situations (i.e. rushing, pass defense, punting, pile-on)
    • field condition (i.e. dry, wet)

FieldTurf also has less injury incidences in warm weather (>70F), however FieldTurf does have more injury incidences than natural grass in cold weather.

That's for football, though

Where part of the job description is being slammed to the ground. Of course injuries will be reduced when the ground is replaced with rubber.

The studies relating to the type of injury have been linked numerous times

it includes grass resulting in more time lost to injury for soccer, but more frequently minor issues for artificial surfaces (most frequently being to minor ankle issues).

You know, if people would stop wearing cleats that dig into the turf,

They might find that the ankle issues would be lessened. I played baseball on turf for three years and I discovered that wearing tennis shoes on turf was like wearing cleats on grass in terms of the traction, and I’m assuming the ankle issues are caused when players step down and then try to twist their foot, something easy with cleats on grass but hard with cleats on turf.

Not our point

The point we are trying to make is that grass/a descent hybrid is what’s best for our boys. Whereas FieldTurf is not (in our opinion). Right now FieldTurf is the best option with the Huskies coming into CenturyLink for a year, making it near impossible for anyone to maintain a grass/hybrid field. But afterward a serious change needs to be considered, although it will take some time before a decision like would be made. I hope that clears up any underlying thoughts about our mission. Trust me when I say the lack of grass is not the biggest problem this organization faces.
