MLS Supplemental Draft Live Thread
Major League Soccer's Supplemental Draft is not televised, but only streamed. The teams have retreated from Kansas City to their hometowns as many already opened training camps. This draft is held via conference call and can be followed via MLSSoccer.com's live stream.
For the real draftniks there are a few known players left. Jeremiah profiled several over at SBNation.com/soccer, while one of our readers filled out a couple more. With the shrinking of the SuperDraft to two rounds, but the expansion of the league to 19 teams, don't think of players taken today as Supplemental Draft picks. Instead think of them as picks number 39 and up, particularly when comparing them to past drafts. So while Mike Fucito was picked in the 4th round (46) of the SuperDraft, this year he would be the 1st round, 7th pick.
Consider this your live thread. We'll have updates on Sounders activity as it happens. The draft starts at 11AM, but the Montreal Impact did the right thing and already announced they will be picking some Canadian.

Great observation about Fucito
Easy to forget that the 4 teams added since the Sounders have had a serious impact on the meaning of a 4th round draft pick.
had to run a quick errand before sno-hilation
thanks

Girlfriend is absolutely giddy about Seattle's coming Snowmageddon
She has the day off and wants to go sledding on Capitol Hill. Not me however. I miss my sunshine. Sigh
In Seattle, the alternative to snow in the winter is usually not sunshine
With the roads mostly just wet the last couple of days, I’ve been enjoying the sight of snow on rooftops.
I'm a snow-a-phob
I spent too many winters as a I kid shoveling driveways. The lack of snow in the city is a major selling point of Seattle. ;-)
I miss shoveling snow
It was a good way to get outside and move around in the winter.
Restocked the beer fridge?

And
the web team thats handling the draft tracker they only show the first 3
RJ Allen is off the board
Chivas picked him 5th. He was on my short list, but I figured he probably wouldn’t drop far enough.
Other good picks (IMHO)
Garcia (Montreal), & Andy Rose (RSL). Surprisingly, Yamada is still on the table.
I also wonder how far Banton will drop
He has a nice pedigree even if he was kinda invisible at the combine.
haha, it is a whole different world down there.
I grew up near ETSU. They had several years in the late 80’s where they performed well at the NCAA roundball tourneys
Now that's a highlight reel any CB would love
I love that long shot that catches the keeper way off his line.
Almost a repeat of the SuperDraft
They take a CB and another striker to compete for those depth spots.
Jason Banton from Leicester City
I imagine Arlo will be happy to see that we are interested in a Leicester City player and giving them a chance to compete for a spot on the roster.

Fabian Kling got picked!
I spent all Fall watching him play for Fort Lewis. Really fun player and certainly skilled enough, but maybe not fast enough for the pro game. Also possible knee issues.
Who was the UCLA guy taken in 09? or 11?

Banton seems like a good pick with good upside?
And here’s hoping that sharing the name “Pontius” means good things to come.

Okay....here we go
He’s a local kid who plays forward. Probably TF since he’s got size (6’1).
http://www.gohuskies.com/sports/m-soccer/mtt/aman_abdul00.html
His name escapes me right now
but the Japanese kid…has he been taken? The draft tracker I’m watching seems slow to update, still showing a blank 3rd round.

Yes, Yamada was taken by the Rapids
The Colorado Rapids now have the only two Japanese players in MLS.
One other note
Yamada went in the 3rd round of the Supplemental with the pick right before the Sounders took Aman.

I couldn't
resist the spaceball reference in MLS live chat for supplemental draft cause of how fast it was going,
actually
its Feighner not fainer and he’s a LB
One wishes - that cat is now in charge of league scheduling

could
be worse it could be one of the MLS refs favorite cat.
Really hope the Sounders take a flyer on him
he’s good enough to play in MLS for sure.
UW Coach Clark coached 7 total drafted players
and Richards, so 4 each from UW and Creighton may play in MLS next year.

Trade with Chicago
It appears we traded our pick in the first round of the supplemental draft to Chicago. Did that just happen today, or is this old news? I thought we still had all our picks intact when we started the day. If we traded, what did we get in exchange? A future pick? Allocation money?
Answering my own question
Matt Gaschk’s second post in this live blog indicates:
Their first round supplemental pick went to Chicago so Seattle could acquire Sammy Ochoa in the allocation.
Does anybody else
find the lack of CM additions to be somewhat suspicious? Not a single player drafted fits the role and really, none of the signings do either. There is no way we go into the season with CM looking the way it does, unless we really do end up putting Fernandez in at CM.

...with Cato and Ngassa in the offing...
not too surpised… I think CM looks thin only because D and F got shored up…

No
CM looks thin because it is. I don’t know, Ngassa and Cato don’t strike me as starting types (having never seen them play I could be wrong).
by Adam Waltering on Jan 17, 2012 1:05 PM PST up reply actions
I sorta thought the same thing
The team must feel pretty good about Alvaro and Evans at CM, but it’d be nice to have another backup there.
Another backup?
I was hoping that at least one of them was starting quality (kidding, kind of, Evans is ok if he’s healthy).

We could see more of the bucket 4-4-2
With two CDMs and more reliance on the long ball to our new TFs. Sigi seemed to use that formation quite a bit when we were having injury problems in midfield in 2009 and 2010. I’d prefer the arrow with the B2B CM, but that’s a strong back-up position if we have an injury crisis again.
Also, don’t forget Seamon as a back-up CM.
I was thinking about that this morning, when I stumbled on this somewhere on MLS.com:
Real Espana execs say 2 of their players are headed to MLS. Real Espana is one of the Honduran clubs Seattle was looking at, with four players rumored: Mario Martinez, Edder Delgado, Ever Alvarado, and Meija (who has since joined another club).
As we know, Alvarado is a LB. Mario Martinez is listed on transfermarkt (not always reliable, I know) as a central attacking midfield, though it is totally possible he could play a slightly deeper role here. Delgado is simply listed as a midfielder.
Not saying any of these moves will happen for sure, but putting 2 and 2 together, it is certainly possible that at least one of these players is headed to Seattle. The biggest thing blocking such a move would be cap space or intl. slots.

Here's the link. http://www.latribuna.hn/2012/01/17/dos-jugadores-del-real-espana-jugarian-en-la-mls/
Apparently one is from the reserve team, one from the first team, and they are waiting on visas.
La Vecchia Signora Forever!
I'm betting one is Ever Alvarado

You're probably right.
But to clarify, did you mean Alvarado to Seattle specifically or just MLS?

Question for Dave, Jeremiah and Crew...
What becomes of the international players such as Aldo Paniagua who signed contracts with MLS, participated in the combine, but were then not selected? Is MLS on the hook for the contracts or are they written in such a way that not being selected voids them?
