Cordell Cato Officially Signs With Seattle Sounders
Long rumored Trinidad & Tobago U-20 national and Port of Spain Defence Force FC player Cordell Cato is no longer rumor, nor trialist, but has in fact signed with Seattle Sounders FC. Cato continues the expansion of Seattle's international roster slots, forcing even more competition.
"Cordell provides us speed and versatility as he can play on the flank and up front," said Sigi Schmid, Sounders FC head coach via press release. "He's a young player with a good future."
Cato is a speedy forward/winger type who trialed with the Sounders last summer. Like other additions this offseason Seattle's pursuit started at least one transfer window prior to his addition to the club. He was first a pro with San Juan Jabloteh FC at the age of 17 and joins Seattle at 19, turning 20 in mid-July. As MLS and team policy terms and fees were not disclosed.
It should be mentioned that there is a YouTube video of an awful miss that misidentifies Cato as the offender.

Welcome to Seattle, Mr. Cato. I hope you enjoy the snow.
Does he occupy a long-term project spot, or might we actually see him on the field this year in non-reservist action?
Roster Spots
Looks like the Sounders have brought in a veritable slew of players to compete for those final roster spots. If my numbers are correct, that’s 8 players for 2 spots (2 first rounders, 4 second rounders, 2 trialists, Rose and Ngassa).
I was just doing this math in my head.
The flip side is that I would be really surprised if we did not cut or trade someone away.
We acutally have a post on this very subject
coming out in about an hour

Agreed
More like 13 or so competing for 7 spots.

I don't think it's quite that simple
I think everyone is going to be competing for a spot. Seamon, Estrada, Tetteh, Sanyang, Scott, Levesque, Meredith, Ford… All current players should make sure they’re staying on top of it and could be cut or moved to accommodate the new guys.
Also, Cato is signed, not a trialist.
I realize now
that you were referring to the two Hondurans as the trialists and that Cato now brings us to 28 (I think).
I'm a bit surprised he's signed.
I was expecting him to come on trial. I gotta agree with agtk. I think Scott, Roger and Tetteh are likely to stay, but Sanyang, Seamon and Estrada have to be feeling the pressure.
Scott seems safe...
but less so than he was two weeks ago. I am more pessimistic on Roger than most, but that it probably because I would be so sad to lose him. The rest are really on the edge. It is going to be an interesting six weeks.
I imagine
that it’d only be good news if Levesque and Scott were cut to make room for other players coming in. It can only mean we’re upgrading the depth of the team… or taking a shot at younger players who show good promise.
I’ve not been too high on guys like Seamon, Tetteh, Sanyang, Scott, Levesque and to a lesser extent Estrada. None of them have shown enough to get on the field the way Fucito has earned it so far.
And hey, we really need the depth with so many games, so let’s hope we’ve got guys competing for starting spots as well.

If you're right about all of Sigi's locks than they shouldn't have any trialists or drafted players

I don't think I've listed 30 players as a lock
Or whatever the magic number is going to be this year.
Also, even if the Sounders already knew who are going to make the roster, there is a lot of value in having more than ~30 players in pre-season training. For future considerations it is good to take a closer look at all draftees even if they wont make the roster this year.
There is no way that Estrada and Seamon are locks
I’d like to see them make the team, but it’s a tad hyperbolic to interpret what Sigi said as anything remotely like a lock.

I admit it may be reading too much into Sigi's comments
But he was talking about what he expects from them during the season, so clearly he has a certain expectation for them.
