Sounders Practice Canceled; Santos Update And Live Q&A

With the ice storm following the snow storm Seattle Sounders FC canceled today's practice. It was to be the formal opening to training camp, even though most players have participated in voluntary workouts for some time. They've been doing that not just because of the roster competition, but because game one this year is in the CONCACAF Champions League against Santos Laguna. Hopefully the early voluntary workouts can alleviate worries from this interview with Jurgen Klinsmann.

Santos sits on 4 points in 2 games played so far as they are early in their season. They ended the Apertura regular season in 4th and last in the two leg Finals for 2nd overall. The team is one of the top two or three in Mexico, which in CONCACAF means they are top two or three in the region. Their 5-1-2 +11 GD in Prelims and Group Stages earned them a spot in the Championship (knockout) Round and includes two wins over the Colorado Rapids by total score of 6-1.

Balón de Oro Awards: Lucas Lobos Named Top Player, Joe Corona Top Newcomer - FMF State Of Mind. In the post-season awards Santos was recognized with best Forward & Defensive Midfielder in Mexico.

Even though they already added American Hercules Gomez they may not be done.

Mexicans Abroad Recap: Guardado leads Deportivo top, Castillo scores and is sent off, Ochoa and Ajaccio post another win - Goal.com

Efrain Juarez, was taken off the roster to free up a non-EU roster spot, though he continues to train with the team. The two strongest possibilities regarding his future are that he returns to Celtic or home to Mexico, possibly with Santos Laguna, which has a working relationship with Celtic.

Santos Laguna takes Jaguares de Chiapas at 5PM Saturday.

Consider this an open thread and live Q&A throughout the day. There isn't likely to be much in the way of Sounders news today. Adam Johansson did go 90 minutes in Sweden's 2-0 friendly win over Bahrain.

There was actually a point where I thought a Q&A/Open Thread wouldn't go up

as I was without power for about an hour. I’m also glad I’m not in a unit in our town home community near the well forrested hillside as we can hear trees crashing down on that hill.

Good question

I would imagine yes. Some players, in the past, have also been put up by host families.

are there any of the trialists you expect to make the team

and are there any returning players that you think are in real danger of not making the team?

by Sandra_R on Jan 19, 2012 9:22 AM PST reply actions

We don't really know who all the trialists are yet

And I don’t think any of us have seen the rookies and trialists we know about play. I think the guys most in danger of making the roster are probably Seamon, Sanyang and Estrada, but I don’t think that’s really going out on a limb.

Not having seen the trialists or draftees yet (excluding highlight videos)

I’m not comfortable saying any will or won’t make the team. The returning players on the bubble are those that didn’t play much (Seamon, Estrada, Tetteh, Sanyang) and the two “older” vets (Scott, Levesque) just because the youth movement is really clear.

There will be a movement about the changes in age soon.

Wouldn't the youth movement also favor Scott and Levesque?

I mean, a lot of veterans were cut from the team and there’s hardly any left on the bench besides these two. The team is going to need experienced players, so it seems unlikely that more will be cut.

And another point: they survived when other veterans were being cut earlier.

A quick look at who is competing for the Reserve spots

I did a quick roster rundown this morning and decided that another way to look at this question is as a percentage problem. What gross percentage would I assign to a player’s chances based on the Sounders returning roster and positional needs?

1. I’m going to assume that all of the returning Sounders who logged significant minutes with the 1st team last year will make the roster again. This includes players like Carrasco, Scott, Levesque, Ochoa, Fucito, etc. Because the team is young, Scott and Levesque provide both veteran leadership and flexibility. I am also including all the GKs because the team hasn’t invited anyone else that we know of and they will be competing among themselves.

2. Of the offseason acquisitions, Johannson is a starter and Sivebaek and Burch earn the benefit of the doubt.

3. I also included Zak and OBW and am not putting either on IR for this exercise.

That means that the team will have 6-7 additional roster spots. I expect that the competition will break down like this.

1. CMs – Due to how thin the roster is at this position I expect the team will carry two additional players here. Currently there are 3 contenders: Seamon, Sanyang and Rose. If the Sounders operate the way most sports teams do, then the returning players have the slots until the new comer displaces them. These 3 players each probably have a 67% chance of making the squad.

2. CBs and FBs: I expect the team would like to carry two more players at these positions. Tetteh, Duran, Pontius, Alvarado and Guitterez are fighting for these two spots with Tetteh having the edge at the start of camp as the returning Sounder. If we assume that Tetteh keeps his spot, then the others each have a roughly 25% chance.

3. Wings and Fwds: That leaves 2-3 slots for FWDs and Wings. Estrada and new signee Cato have the inside track at the start of camp with competition from Sodade, Banton and Ngassa. This is the area most likely to be impacted if the team puts either OBW or Zak on the IR. I also think that this is area that is most likely to be a battle. At the minimum, they all have a 40% chance of making the squad.

Obviously, IR and the actual performance will make a difference. But this gives a numerical baseline.

by Abbott Smith on Jan 19, 2012 1:01 PM PST up reply actions

Just realized that I forgot to include Feighner and Aman

Add Feighner to the CB/FB group and Aman to the FWD/Wing pool. As late Supplemental picks, they are both long shots.

by Abbott Smith on Jan 19, 2012 1:29 PM PST up reply actions

Whats the likelyhood that Banton makes the squad?

If he/other intl’s are cut how does that effect MLS and the Super Draft? I got to think there is pressure from MLS to get these players on squads. Also what will happen to the players signed by the league but not drafted ala Aldo Paniagua?

by Colin Johnson on Jan 19, 2012 9:35 AM PST reply actions

I assume that Paniagua will be placed by the league with various teams during training

And you’re right about the pressure. The ability to recruit these youth internationals will be damaged if players like this don’t make rosters. But MLS clearly has to work better with its teams. These players have to be of interest to teams for this trend to continue.

I would think he has a decent chance

If he plays well in training, he does play a position the Sounders are always looking to improve. I really don’t think MLS is going to tell the Sounders to put him on the team if the Sounders really don’t think he’s earned it.

I’m guessing some team gives Paniagua and the other signed int’ls a trial at least.

I agree that MLS isn't going to force any team

but I do think they will talk to the teams and suggest that the players make the team at least the 1st year. I also think that unless MLS is able to sign better youth intl’s for the draft more and more will fall/not be drafted. I would be curious if clubs ask MLS to sign these players or if the league signs them without club input.

by Colin Johnson on Jan 19, 2012 9:49 AM PST up reply actions

If a club found them

they’d just be brought into camp via the discovery process. These players are scouted by the league offiices.

Allocation Money

This is a question that I’ve been wondering about for a while now. When MLS players go on loan in the off-season, do their clubs receive allocation money from that exchange? For example Henrey and Donavon both are on loan in the EPL right now. Does that mean RBNY and LA will be getting additional allocation funds as a result?

I know clubs get allocation funds for not making the playoffs, being an expansion team, player transfer fees (66% fee up to ~$650,000 max), and for making the champions league group stage. Are loan fees another possible source? Have I missed other sources?

Thanks for doing this QA.

by jacobcda on Jan 19, 2012 9:52 AM PST reply actions

I would think long-range, sure...

At some point, the league will be in a strong enough financial situation that the players will be able to force an end to single entity. How far off is that? Well, that’s a whole other question. I’d think it’s not even on the radar for 10 years.

Couple things about Andy Rose...

1. Is he basically just a trialist at this point?
2. Am I the only person that reads his acquisition as saying that Rose could take Sanyang’s roster spot?

by The96Picks on Jan 19, 2012 9:53 AM PST reply actions

The only difference between a draftee and a trialist

is that the team can retain a drafted player’s rights for two years even if unsigned.

My readings about Rose make him look more box-to-box than CDM so maybe more pressure on Seamon than Sanyang.

The next step is probably to have an actual First Team and Reserve Team so that the number of reserve games can expand.

we need for our reserve league to have more than 10 games. I am glad they brought it back as it is better than nothing. I think the future of this league rests in the development of the youth as we are several years(decades?) away from being able to financially compete with Europe’s top leagues.

It's really hard to compare

Ford was unfortunate to not get almost anytime playing last season.

by majora999 on Jan 19, 2012 11:31 AM PST up reply actions

My slightly nutty conspiracy theory

is that the team actually has liked Meredith over Ford since they were drafted. Knowing that Boss would get most of the Reserve League minutes, Meredith was “cut” so that he could get playing time with Kitsap. In the event of injury (which did happen) he was available to be signed and would have played in actual games. But maybe it’s just my tinfoil cap…

It's entirely possible that is what happened

Unless you have been watching Ford in practice it’d be hard to make any real comparisons between them up to this point. Until we actually see Ford get some more game time, or both be on the roster and healthy then see which one plays, it’s impossible for us to know where each stand.

National Team Duty

Seems like more players on this year’s roster are on their national team’s radar. I know Parke and Evans are locks for WCQ. Though with multiple international tournaments this summer, (Olympics, Euro 2012, WCQ, etc) I’m wondering how much that might impact the Sounders. What other MLS teams would these competitions affect the most (LA would be my first guess).

correction

i meant Parke and Evans are NOT locks for USMNT

by beejay76 on Jan 19, 2012 10:14 AM PST up reply actions

They probably have a very outside chance for that

considering that they got picked into the January team only after other players had to turn down the call. It’s a long way from second choice for a MLS-only national team to the WCQ national team.

Philly is going to get hammered during the Olympics

They have like 6 players who will be gone for more than 3 weeks.

Dallas loses a couple as well, and Brek Shea could be gone for both Olympics and Qualifiers.

The unbalanced schedule

came up again recently in interview(s), with Sigi replying that it will be harder to win the Supporters Shield playing in the more competitive West. That got me to thinking about ways to alter the points awarded in interconference games in a way that would eliminate the advantage of playing in the weaker East. How does this sound: for the purposes of awarding the Shield, interconference wins count as 9 points, draws as 3. By making the points count triple the intraconference rate, it balances the total points earnable from intra- and inter- conference games. For conference standings and seeding playoffs, the conventional points system would suffice.

Formation clarification

Can someone explain to me what formation is the “Sigi arrow”? Until listening to Nos Audietis today I had assumed it was just the local term for 4-2-3-1.

Seems like we are continuing to build to play 4-2-3-1, which I why I don’t understand the desire of some people for CAM. In this system Fredy is effectively the CAM, though probably more accurately a trequartista. If Fredy’s unavailable they will likely either move Rosales into that position and bring on another RW or switch to a more conventional 4-4-2 or 4-1-3-2, depending on whether one or both CM push up, by adding a second forward.

In my mind a CAM only works in a 4-diamond-2 (aka 4-1-3-2) or 4-3-3 and would either crowd Montero out of his optimal space or have him playing CAM behind two forwards. The latter would leave Alonso a ton of work to do (think Argentina in the 2010 WC, with a forward 6 of Mascherano and 5 strikers)

by PhootieD on Jan 19, 2012 12:42 PM PST reply actions

It is similar in ways to a 4-2-3-1 or a 4-1-3-1-1

And yes every author here sees a CAM and Montero as the trequartista as occupying very similar spaces.

Almost seems to me like

a 4-1-1-3-1 with say, Evans playing between Alonso and Montero, but Montero level with the wide mids/wingers, not further advanced

by The96Picks on Jan 19, 2012 12:51 PM PST up reply actions

thanks

Both of these sound like slight tweaks to the 4-2-3-1 then, depending whether the CM are side by side or staggered and where the wide players are in relation to the midfield. We tend to play w/ wide players further forward, so more 4-1-1-3-1 than 4-1-3-1-1.
unless we’re seeing a 34-26-34 I’ll just stick with thinking about 4-2-3-1 vs 4-4-2 vs 4-diamond-2

well let me ask you this (Jeremiah/Chrisso)

with the way most major world clubs and especially national teams view the mls as a lesser league, do you think if Montero was transfered today to a mid table serie a club like Fiorantina or a mid table la liga team like Getafe do you think he would be more likely to get a call or at least a good look for a national team spot?

by brandinho on Jan 19, 2012 1:29 PM PST up reply actions

I think it more will have to do with Colombia's new coach then where Fredy plays

I would be surprised if he didn’t get an invitation this summer. I am not sure Fredy moving to a mid table team like Getafe or Fiorantina would change how the Colombian MNT’s new coach views him.
I think more important for Fredy is to show continued improvement and maturity. His effort and play improved in the second half of last season to the point where some people were suggesting he be a late entry for POY honors.

by chrisso on Jan 19, 2012 1:37 PM PST up reply actions

A friend of mine is Brazilian and we talk CONMEBOL soccer I have asked him this very question about Montero

Colombia has changed their team manager 3 and a half times (the half is for an assistant who managed the team for maybe two months) in the time Fredy has been playing for Seattle. The level of expectation for the national team is brutally passionate. Colombia’s MNT have had an itchy trigger on the manager for as long as they have played soccer.
I think the instability in the coaching position is more the blame here than where Fredy Montero has been playing.

by chrisso on Jan 19, 2012 1:49 PM PST up reply actions

well i think the bottom line here is

we would all be proud to see Montero get a few national team call ups!

Based on the various roster changes to Vancouver and Portland

Which team will be more improved from last year.
Granted Vancouver has further back to build from.

by chrisso on Jan 19, 2012 1:07 PM PST reply actions

For me Portland

Vancouver hasn’t addressed it’s problems in the back and up the spine. Lots of new creative talent on the attacking end, but I can’t see them stopping other teams from scoring yet.

by Abbott Smith on Jan 19, 2012 1:09 PM PST up reply actions

I agree with Portland being a step ahead

They’re coming a reasonably successful season with a core of guys in the midfield that are used to working together. They’ve done the tough work on the off-season to upgrade their defense and look like they’ll be stiff competition for us in our region.

Vancouver on the other hand is having to retool again after two coaches and a number of lineup and roster changes. They’re starting fresh and I don’t think they’ve made the off-season moves they needed to make to compete at a high level.

by Dizzo on Jan 19, 2012 1:15 PM PST up reply actions

FO with a plan

I think the big problem that Vancouver has had so far is that the FO doesn’t have a clear short term plan. Truth be told, I won’t be surprised if Montreal has a better season. Not only is Montreal in the East, but they also have a very clear idea of what they are trying to do. I have to admit that I am enjoying watching that FO work.

My co rec soccer teammate is flying on Alaska Air tomorrow

He said the 3 o’clock flight was scheduled to depart on time tomorrow.
I think the same flight was delayed but still going to Phoenix this evening.

With flights currently grounded at seatac,

it seems that any flights tomorrow will almost certainly be delayed.
