Major Link Soccer: Training Camps Getting Underway, DC Having A Rough Go At Finding A New Home
Friday was the last day to pre-order the 2012 edition of the Sounder At Heart official Scarf. Scarves are still available, but they are $20 apiece until we run out.
With training camps starting to fire up across Major League Soccer, that means more news is going to start rolling in and that means the official return of Major Link Soccer. That means every Friday and Monday you'll get your dose of all things Major League Soccer.
So without further ado..
Former Columbus Crew forward Robbie Rodgers has his work permit for England and is ready to strike it out in the nPower Championship with historic Leeds United. He was available to Leeds on a free transfer due to his contract expiring, the 24 year-old will sign a year and a half contract once he's gained international clearance. Rodgers has already played for Leeds in a closed door match with Newcastle.
The New York Red Bulls have started up training camp, and what's that mean kids? That means Rafael Marquez is back in a Red Bulls kit. At least he wont have Tim Ream to bash on anymore. At a pre-training press conference he decided that he need to 'clear the air' regarding some things he said last season.
"At a certain point in time I was misinterpreted," Marquez said through a translator, team spokesman Jurgen Mainka. "There were times the media might take one of the comments the wrong way. It would have been easy for me to just call it quits and accept one of the offers (to leave in the offseason). But I’m here and I’m part of this team and I’m very ingrained with what’s going to happen in the future."
He still has two matches left on his suspension from last season.
Speaking of the Red Bulls it seems that a judge has ordered them to play taxes on Red Bull Arena to Harrison New Jersey according to Judge Christine Nugent. She also rejected a claim by the team that the arena "serves a public purpose and should be tax-exempt". They could end up paying upwards to $3.6 million in tax bills to the town in which the stadium sits.
"Harrison has had a difficult time as a municipal entity," he said by telephone. "This is a shot in the arm."
FC Dallas is sending super utility player Jackson on a season long loan to his native Brazil, he will be playing for Cruzeiro. According manager Schellas Hyndman that Jackson need to head back to Brazil for familial reasons.
"Jackson is going to be playing with a very good team in an excellent league, which will help him improve as a player," said FC Dallas head coach Schellas Hyndman. "This loan will also give him the chance to spend the time he needs close to his home."
As I'm sure you know that over this off season LA Galaxy set-piece taker David Beckham's contract expired and he was looking for work. According to a SkySports report he had a couple offers on the table from Premier League teams though he wouldn't name exactly what teams. In the end he decided not to up root his family from the city of angels and signed a two year contract with the MLS Cup winners LA Galaxy.
"I'm not looking to retire after those two years. Not at this moment - that might change. "I'm 36 now, 37 in May, and I still feel good. I want to continue to play as much as possible. We were just talking about (former United team-mate) Paul Scholes retiring and then he comes back. Players miss it."
And there has been a cause of rampant speculation, as he has a clause that will allow him become a club owner when ever he decides to hang up the boots. The speculation being that he may become the owner of the 20th franchise in Major League Soccer.
It could be a while before the Black and Red of DC United find a new place to call home. Right now the city itself is knee deep in all kinds of fun things like: tax dodging, misusing government funds and that's just the tip of the iceberg. While at the MLS SuperDraft, MLS Commish Don Garber was asked about the situation in DC.
"[United president] Kevin Payne is working hard to try to find a solution there. It is very frustrating," said the commissioner. "I think he’s beginning to make some progress with the city council and with the mayor. If you guys follow local politics there, there’s been all sorts of challenges with local politicians who no longer will be free men, and that just makes the dynamic of negotiating that much more difficult."
RFK boarders the 5th Ward, the Representative of that ward is Harry Thomas Jr who has recently given up his council spot as part of a guilty plea on Federal charges. Those charges included theft and filing false tax returns. According to the report he embezzled $300,000 in funds that were ear marked for youth sports programs. Yikes.
We will wrap things up for this edition of Major Link Soccer with highlights from the scrimmage between the USMNT and USMNT U-23's. Hat tip to The Original Winger.
I'm always on the look out for news stories and sometimes I miss stuff, so if you'd like to bring a story that you feel needs to be put in Major Link Soccer - all you have to do is shoot me a email orionchef [at] gmail dot com.

Damn shame about DCU and NYRB
Both clubs have the potential to be great, on the field and in the arena, but they are so poorly managed. Makes me all the more thankful when I read stories like these and see our neighbors to the north.
Go banana!
I don't think DCU is poorly managed
Kevin Payne has been the president and GM there from the beginning, and they have been the most successful club in MLS (4 MLS Cps, 4 Supporters Shield, 2 USOCs and 1 CONCACAF Champions’ Cup).
It is just their stadium situation that is difficult, but you cannot blame DCU for that.

"What've you done for me lately?"
DCU is the most storied club in MLS’ illustrious 15yr history but they’ve become complacent in recent years; that falls on the FO. The situation in DC is toxic but a team with the history and fan base of DCU should’ve been able to work something out now.
Go banana!
That's a fair point
But years of success are often followed by years missing the playoffs in MLS. I think it is due to the salary cap and other roster building rules causing that it is almost impossible to keep a successful team together for many years. They seem to be getting it together again now, and it was just 3 years ago when they won the USOC and just 2 years since they made the final. Even the last supporters shield is not that long ago.
Agreed on all counts
But the DC FO should have struck while the iron was hot, most teams push for stadium deals while the team is successful as the public is more likely to support it. They had to have known that RFK wasnt a viable long term solution. I feel bad because the team/supporters deserve better but at the end of the day it’s a business, if it’s better for the league that they move to Baltimore (or wherever) then so be it.
Go banana!
They have been working on the stadium situation for years
The first proposal came in 2006, when the iron was definitely hot. They won the Supporters Shield that year and also in 2007, Their last MLS Cup had come in 2004.

Er, except one point
We won the USOC three years ago, but I knew what you were going for. I was more than upset when they only drew >5K for the USOC final. (which I put on the FO and I realize that might not be fair)
Go banana!
Two points
1) The USOC final in DC was played on September 2, 2009. That is closer to two years ago than three years ago.
2) The attendance in the 2009 USOC final in DC was reported as 17,329. I was at the match, and I have no reason to think that wasn’t accurate. That is one of the highest attendances for a USOC final in the MLS era. Only the two finals in Seattle and the 1998 and 2000 finals in Chicago have drawn better. Most other finals have drawn less than 10,000.
Great Post
I really like the new format and I found the DCU article very interesting. That city is a perfect spot for a MLS Renaissance, but it really needs to move out of RFK for that to happen.
Thanks!
Yeah the DCU story is an interesting one for sure. It’s just crazy what’s going on there, though it shouldn’t be to much of a surprise being DC and all.

Let us not forget Marion Barry
Local government in D.C. is problematic at best and the corruption word is frequently associated with it. Throw in the negative blow-back from the MLB Washington National’s stadium deal and DC United has incredibly difficult task in front of them.
I wish them all the best in getting something done because the team and the league need it.

Random additions
I cant be the only one that is happy to see NY have to pay. First of all they almost bankrupted that town with the stadium. Second, they annoy me and not just because they have won FIFA 12 the last two years of manager mode. They stink EA Sports ?!?!
Toronto has already sold 35,000 seats for the LA Champion’s League game ( indoors due to snow threat )….and they didn’t give them away.
schadenfreude often?
In manager mode, I have made sure that the Sounders have held the trophies both USOC and MLS. Also speaking of FIFA12 anyone figure out how to get Gspurning?
I am thinking of putting together a fanpost on how to put together the current roster on FIFA12
Basically go search for Gspurning in Creation Centre. Someone with the handle Sounder74 has created him as well as a bunch of other good Sounders/MLS related stuff that you can bookmark and download.
I hadn't thought of looking in Creation Centre
I was just trying the good old fashion acquire via a Trade. I have added a bunch of cheers and songs. If anyone is interested I could probably email the cheers and songs (about 6 mp3s)
That would be awesome
I was getting a collection of them on my old PC when the hard drive died on me.
Send me an email
I am ccondit (at) gmail dot com
Anyone else is welcome, too.
Just put sounder cheers in subject line.
