Muslimovic was joined at the Rangers training HQ today by American youngster Jamael Cox, who will spend a week training McCoist's men. Cox, a 19-year-old midfielder currently plays for Seattle Sounders, whose MLS season has ended

Rangers in talks with Bosnian targetman Zlatan Muslimovic as midfielder Jamael Cox arrives on trial - The Daily Record

Great find by @GoSounders. Here's an intriguing question, if Cox has interest from teams of that caliber should the Sounders be signing him just to sell him?

Rangers/Old Firm are a big deal in SPL

but I’ll argue that MLS is actually a better league, in both talent and development than the SPL.

I would agree on all counts

But if a Sounders Academy player, and not one of the ‘names’ from that year, is nearly a Rangers quality player maybe this Academy is doing a damn fine job.

In re: "signing him just to sell him"

Does that help Sounders, or just MLS generally?

Both

Sounders would get some money out of it, and both the League and the Sounders would gain recognition.

What does the kid get out of it?

If that’s all we have in mind for him, he’d probably prfer just to sign with Rangers on his own…

Signing to sell

could backfire? Or if they signed to sell would they be basically taking whatever they offered?

Or if this guy is someone drawing interest from a world power like that, why haven’t we signed him?

Rangers essentally have unlimited roster slots

The Rangers can offer him a contract and stash him in their youth or reserve systems until he develops. He won’t be expected to perform for the team for years if ever. The Sounders only have 30 spots and a lot of young talent they want to keep/develop.

Also, if I understand the rules correctly, even if Cox signs with Rangers the Sounders would still own his MLS rights. Even if he does sign the odds are long that he ever makes the senior team. So, if he doesn’t cut it at Rangers and returns the states the Sounders could sign him then.

Ending up in Rangers' youth/reserve system...

is like going to football purgatory. Maybe even football hell. He will never get out. I promise. He’d be better off trying to trade on a lower-level MLS side and working into the first team than anything in Scotland. MLS > SPL. The SPL is quite dour, frankly, and it’s no longer a respected league.

Maybe I'm underselling them, but

…I think, right now, Sounders would win 2 or 3 out of 10 matches against those two, and probably take a majority of the matches against the rest of the league. The big two in SPL aren’t a huge step ahead of good MLS sides. Plus, the league is getting worse. The talented players move on to England or other elsewhere and the SPL doesn’t attract top talent anymore.

That's pretty much it.

Picture the teams in the lower levels in England that have financial difficulties and flirt with going out of business. That’s pretty much the financial picture for the non-Old Firm clubs in Scotland. Any player who looks even slightly OK in that league gets bought by Premier League clubs, even though the Scottish players’ recent track record in the English Premier League is not that great. The third place team hasn’t paid players on time in something like four months, and when it finally paid for December, almost a month late, they literally waited until the check cleared from selling a player to an English club (I think, but I could be wrong) and used that money to pay the December wage bill.
If it helps paint the picture, Cillian Sheridan, who both the Sounders and Timbers trialed and passed on (even though at the time we were putting Noonan and Jaqua out there) has started over half the games for the current 4th place team (tied on points with 3rd place Hearts – who will most likely be docked points for financial issues this year – but behind on differential). In their premier league era, it’s been pretty strange if a team outside the old firm even finishes in the top two. Pretty sad, really.

The one good selling point on signing for Rangers, and this is huge… if you play for Rangers, you have a UK work permit. After that, presumably it would be MUCH easier to end up on an EPL side.

You do all the work for us, Honey Badger, and we'll just eat whatever you find.

Not disputing anything you are saying

But Rangers do have a pretty good track record of treating American players decently. That would seem to be in Cox’s favor.

For what it's worth

I read some comments on a uk article. The Rangers fans aren’t too happy about these trials. And I seem to have read (not sure if it’s true) that rangers might be facing administration. Maybe they’re in a position to free up some money.

Too bad this isn't baseball

We give them Jamael Cox, a player to be named later and cash. They give us Maurice Edu.
