Panama Vs. United States: Live Gamethread

The United States is running out of chances to find some solid form before World Cup qualifying starts in summer. Tonight, they take on a Panamanian team they really should beat and they will be returning to the 4-4-2 that Jurgen Klinsmann has seemed so intent on doing away with. Chris Wondolowski will start alongside Teal Bunbury at forward.

Neither Jeff Parke nor Brad Evans are in the starting lineup, but they will likely be on the bench. It looks like Klinsmann is going to give Michael Parkhurst and Geoff Cameron a second look at center back, which makes sense after their strong performance against Venezuela. Ricardo Clark will start with Jermaine Jones in the central midfield.

Enjoy

Panama starters: Mejía; Algandona, Dasent, Vázquez, Rodríguez; Waithe, Sánchez, Gómez, Quintero; Rentería, Pérez.

United Sates starters: Rimando; DeLaGarza, Parkhurst, Cameron, Loyd; Zusi, Clark, Jones (capt.), Shea; Wondolowski, Bunbury

I hope Sparkles gets out there. Barring some sort of miracle, I don’t really expect him to get another shot, so just a few minutes in the jersey for the man would be great!

I think Parke could serve as good depth during the upcoming qualifying campaign, depending on his form during the year. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if he gets called in again in the future, depending on what it’s for.

Come on put Sparkles in!!!

And please sub Zusi and Shea out when they are freaking tired after 45 or 50 minutes.

by chrisso on Jan 25, 2012 5:05 PM PST reply actions

Based on Jones' performance in the last match

I wonder if Klinsmann is going to ask him to play higher and more offensively tonight. Ricardo Clark provides a pretty similar player otherwise, which to my very untrained eye would seem to leave a pretty big hole in the connection between the midfield and the forwards. Unless somehow Wondo is coming much deeper than he’s usually effective at? I seem to recall Sounders neutralising him by forcing him to drop back to receive the ball, but perhaps that was as much a function of his strike partner.

OT - Real Madrid and Barcelona

I just caught the very end of the broadcast this afternoon and tuned in just in time to see Pepe screaming at the refs. Was he just mad they didn’t show any self-respect by not red-carding him for having the guts to step onto the field?

by brokejumper on Jan 25, 2012 5:17 PM PST reply actions

The Game

Watched the whole thing.

Madrid had a lot of opportunities in the 1st half, just did not finish. Barcelona was up 1-0 until the very end of the half when one of the best goals I have ever seen happened.

Real Madrid played well in the 2nd half and tied the game with 20 minutes remaining. Pepe was mainly screaming at the end because a free kick was called for at mid-field and before the kick was taken, time was called.

by tarheels24 on Jan 25, 2012 5:20 PM PST up reply actions

Madrid

also had a goal called back on a very dubious foul.

by agtk on Jan 25, 2012 5:23 PM PST up reply actions

I didn't think the foul was that dubious.

That being said, I cannot stand watching El Clasico. Alves’ goal was a jaw-dropper, and both the opener and Benzema’s goal were pretty amazing, but it’s not worth the 89 minutes of flopping, whining, card-brandishing, and general douchebaggery from both sides. Am I alone in this?

Seemed to me he was giving it for what he considered a DOGSO, which to my understanding doesnt actually require him to be “last man”. I saw a bad touch that took him back towards Cameron.

And no, when a defender is directly opposite and more goalside than Cameron I’d say application of the “last man” principle isn’t proper either.

Mexico is currently losing to Venezuela

switching over to that game to see if they play each other the way they play us, or do we just get ‘special’ treatment

I don't think

Parke made much of a case for himself.

Just finished watching on ESPN3

Bottom Line: Nice result for us, and personally quite nice to see both Sounders.

ESPN’s coverage was just awful though.

Twellman was his usual Twellmanish self, but Ortiz was remarkably poor. I can’t believe they pay him money. It’s really a disservice to everyone involved.

And the commentary at halftime was a complete disaster – disparaging to MLS with a fairly narrow perspective about what motivates players. Seriously bad form ESPN.

Anyone know how to contact the network to express my disappointment?

I disagree

I thought his “gol” was terrible.

I very much dislike the rag doll style the Panamanian national team played

and all of their club teams seem to play too. They flopped soooo much. At least 75% of the “fouls” on them were flops.
