Around SBN: NFL Players Ready To Welcome Gay Teammate

While Steve Zakuani didn't exactly put a timeline on this potential return, he made it pretty clear during an interview on Extra Time Radio that he doesn't foresee coming back before May. That almost certainly means he'll open the season the injured list, as that would mean his roster spot would remain open and he'd have to miss at least six games.

So, what is the deal with senior roster spots and cap space?

Its not clear to me that Zak going on the IR would free up any cap space. He’ll take up a senior spot due to his salary. But does a player filling that spot while he’s on the reserve count against the cap? If so, that just means another $42,000+ against the cap which the Sounders may not have available.

Just listened to the full interview.

Geez, Zakuani is a stellar human being.

I’ll cheer for him, whatever he’s up to, for the rest of my life.

Everyone should listen to the podcast.

Everyone should listen to the full interview that Steve did with the guys on the Extra Time Radio podcast. It really was a joy to hear the in depth conversation he had with the Extra Time Radio guys. They all were very personable which made this much more of a conversational interview as opposed to a more traditional Q and A type of interview. Listening to Steve talk about where he was and is now will emphasize what a super person Steve is. I was also impressed on how he is not letting the injury and past govern his life now. Actually hearing the timbre and tone of his voice, plus the positive outlook he expressed during the whole duration of the interview left me with a better feeling for Steve’s future. I still have grave concerns on the likelihood of Steve being able to return to 99% of where he was before the injury, but just listening to Steve talk in length on where he is now has allayed some of those worries at this time.

Some of the points or highlights I took from the interview.

  • super positive comments about how the Sounders have dealt with him
  • expressed his appreciation for the support provided by Sounders fans
  • his ability to look to the future and not dwell upon the past
  • just how close we came to never seeing Steve play soccer again
  • his recovery still has a long way to go
  • We are fortunate to have such an exemplary human being as Steve on our team.
  • Steve Zakuani is a walking testament to Dr. Norman Vincent Peale and ‘The Power of Positve Thinking’

Sad to hear, but not really surprising.

The severity of the injury and the complications he experienced made it sound to me like at least a year plus recovery. I’m stoked the compartment syndrome didn’t end his career, so having him back at all is great in my book. Not to mention that not starting the season in the 18 will make his return all the sweeter. Just hope he can get back to his pre-injury form….fingers crossed in time for the playoffs

If Zakuani and OBW can come back at full speed by the playoffs I would be happy

Even if they can only come in for 30 minutes at the end of the game the ability to add those sorts of offensive weapons at the end of the game could be a huge boost in a playoff game.

Better late than never

Can’t wait for that first game when he comes in off the bench, I can only imagine how pumped and jacked the crowd will be.
