It's odd, because as of now 2016 is not a Copa year. But if CONCACAF and CONMEBOL were to work together the scehdule probably gets shifted quite a bit.

Would be interesting to see if that would get Canada invited. Were once in the past but withdrew because of issues in Columbia I believe making it seem unsafe to send a team. Now if it were in the States it would be an ideal time for Canada to take part

Of the COMNEBOL teams only Bolivia has a lower ranking than Honduras.

how the 6 CONCACAF teams are selected is the key

…and it also raises the question of how the CONCACAF representative to the Confederations cup would be selected. In a perfect world I think the schedule would work like this:
2014 World Cup
2015 Gold Cup and Copa America
2016 Pan-Am Cup (i.e. the Copa America described above)
2017 World Cup Qualifying
… repeat every 4-year cycle.

Currently, there are basically 8 World Cup spots available between CONMEBOL (4 guaranteed) and CONCACAF (3 guaranteed) plus the 8th determined by a playoff between 5th and 4th, respectively. I’ve wondered for a while if the two confederations should try some sort of “Hybrid” qualiffier system, with earlier rounds by confederation, and later rounds by combining the two. There has to be someone out there smart enough to figure out how to make this work.
