United States v Canada: CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying Women's Soccer Final Gamethread

While both teams already qualified for the London 2012 Olympiad there is a certain amount of pride at play. For Canada's women this is an opportunity to declare that they deserve to be in that top tier of teams challenging for Gold or Women's World Cups. With the Great White North hosting the 2015 Women's World Cup it is matches like this and their second straight 20k+ crowd that demonstrate that they are a top nation in the women's game.

The United States women and Coach Pia Sundhage made it quite clear in this tournament that they are out to prove not just that they are the world's number one, but that no one else in CONCACAF is even close. In the group stage they had a +31 goal differential with 3 shutouts. In the semifinal they notched another shutout and another three goals. Canada was a clear #2 with a total goal differential of +14 and two shutouts.

Tonight's lineup for the USA is Solo; Mitts, Rampone (c), Sauerbrunn, O'Hara; Rodriguez, Lloyd, Lindsey, Rapinoe; Morgan, Wambach

For the Canadians; McLeod; Sesselmann, Woeller, Chapman, Gayle; Scott; Kyle, Schmidt, Parker; Sinclair, Julien

This is your gamethread for tonight's "meaningless" game in front of 25,000 raging in Red & White on NBC Sports Network (Comcast 34/626 or check listings) at 5PM Pacific.

I think this is NBC Sports Network's first soccer event

During the NHL All-Star Game they aired a few of their MLS promos, but this will give us an idea about how they do with soccer

Thanks for this.

I actually didn’t realize this was on TV and thought I was going to be stuck with the stream.

Same boat.

So glad I don’t have to put up with another bad CONCACAF.com stream. Thanks for the heads-up, S@H!

Still didn't see any MLS promos at halftime.

Seems like a missed opportunity for both network and league.

I guess your thread wins. :P

Interesting notes:

The 2008 tournament ended with the same teams, that game resulted in the US winning in penalties.

Will Sydney Leroux play against Canada in the city she was born?

The game is airing on CONCACAF TV here: http://www.concacaftv.premiumtv.co.uk/page/Home/

SoundersJunkie's FanPost

The final match in the CONCACAF Olympics qualifying tournament begins tonight at 5pm. The last two teams standing are Canada and the United States. The prevailing wisdom for this game has the US expected to win, but it would be foolish to take this for granted. This is precisely the same matchup as the 2008 Olympic qualifier. In that game, the US Women did in fact win, but only after penalties.

The Canadian women are a strong team and anything could happen today. Luckily for us, one of the best Canadian women in this tournament is Sydney Leroux. Born in Vancouver, where this game will be held, Leroux is a dual citizen playing on the US Team. It will certainly be interesting to see if she subs into this game.

The match will be airing today at 5pm pacific on CONCACAF TV. I was planning on making it to the game, but unfortunately it’s not going to be possible. I’ll be watching from home with some friends while wearing my ‘Los Gringos’ scarf. I hope some of you can join me for discussion

BC Place is pretty impressive looking from the outside.

Been in V-town a lot lately on business and stay in a hotel close to it. Need to get there during a game, and we’re already making plans to see the Women’s World Cup games there in 2015.

She's an honorary Sounder.

Saw her in attendance at a Reserves game at Starfire last year, and she walked into the locker room with the team (and Servando, natch), so she qualifies.

by The King of Norway on Jan 29, 2012 5:15 PM PST up reply actions

She was also in the supporters section in Vancouver when we played the Whitecaps. Very early scouting for this match, I’m sure.

Alex Morgan! Yeah!

Nice to see her start and make an impact right away.

by The King of Norway on Jan 29, 2012 5:14 PM PST reply actions

Agreed.

She didn’t even appear as a sub on Tuesday, it was looking like she was almost being pushed out by Leroux.

We look like we're making some really lazy passes right now.

Canada looks less aggressive, but actually more organized at the moment.

Canada looking dangerous!

Nervy moment in the box, and I winced when Solo collided with Julian.

with Solo's health I don't like those

can’t lose her for the Olympics

Has the team publicly addressed the injury with her leg that was so evident earlier in the tournament?

Yeah she looks a little unsteady right now.

And Canada looks the more dangerous of the two sides.

I missed the actual contact,

but I was amused that it seemed to be an argument between her and her twin sister on the opposing team.

I'd kind of like to see Solo come out at halftime.

She won’t like it, but there’s no good reason to keep her in right now. And I want her in London.

by The King of Norway on Jan 29, 2012 6:00 PM PST reply actions

Bah, Pia doesn't listen to me.

Solo makes a great save right away, rendered unnecessary by the AR and her yellow-and-red flag.

by The King of Norway on Jan 29, 2012 6:13 PM PST up reply actions

Lindsey close!

Nice leave by A-Rod, Lindsey brings it around the defender smartly, but bends the kick just over the bar.

But we should probably start referring to Servando Carrasco as “Alex Morgan’s boyfriend” instead of the other way around.

I think she was already more well known after the goal int he last World Cup.

However, that was as much for her looks as her soccer talent. I think it is good for her to show how good she is on the field.

But old habits die hard. I have to keep reminding myself that Alex Morgan will not be awarded the “man of the match”.

by The King of Norway on Jan 29, 2012 6:34 PM PST up reply actions

This team reminds me of the 2007-08 team

Lost in the World Cup in a game they should have won, came back pissed in the Olympics and took it all.

by The King of Norway on Jan 29, 2012 6:36 PM PST reply actions

US holding possession well now

Look thoroughly in control. I’m happy to keep the ball as far away from Solo as possible.

Not bad, but it was obviously a minimum staff.

We had the same two people doing in game commentary and the halftime show. Also, neither of them were Arlo White.
