Looking for playtesters for a soccer board game
So, a few times I've mentioned I've been working on a soccer board game. This is a serious, stat-driven game that allows you to take real teams and have them meet on the pitch. If you like baseball games like Strat-o-Matic or Pursue the Pennant, then you'd probably like those, though it uses card-driven mechanics that should make the flow of the game feel more like the real thing.
Anyhoo, I'll be demoing the game for a public playtest at an upcoming game convention in town -- GAME ON! on February 17-19 at the Issaquah Holiday Inn. You can find more information about the convention at https://www.facebook.com/groups/242124702488209/ or ask me and I'll tell you what you need to know.
For the convention, I'll be bringing the 8 MLS playoff teams from 2009 plus DC United from that year, so you can play Seattle's first Open Cup win if you want. The final published game will likely come with the most recent 16 top UEFA Champions League teams, but the system will be "open source" to allow players to rate the teams of their choice.

Great!
I’ll look for you there. I’m also thinking of some other playtests, maybe at like Blue Highway Games in Queen Anne, if that’s easier to get to.

Let us know if there are any other tests. Queen Anne is easy for me to get to.
I’m just not entirely certain I want to pay the fee for the convention to help you test. I know pretty much nothing about most of the tabletop games that they are talking about on the facebook page, so I don’t think I’d get much out of it.
That being said, I also know nothing about Stat-O-Matic or any sports stats games. So I’m probably just not the most useful person for playtesting.

I would like to help
Do you have to be available all three days?
No, show up when you can.
Saturday is the main day I’ll be there, but I’ll also make time on Friday or Sunday if others are free to play those days. Really just need a couple hours of your time. (But feel free to play longer if you enjoy the game.)

Dude, I wish I lived in Seattle
I’d be all over this. Anything to get my face out of the Football Manager screen – heh.
Football Manager is my great computer distraction.
But I think there’s room in the marketplace for a board game … y’know, for those times when you want to interact with real people.

Speaking of Football Manager ...
sean, have you ever checked out fmnorthamerica.com? It’s a fansite for those who like to run MLS leagues in the game. We’re going to do a network game later with the 2012 game once we feel the game is solid enough — probably another patch or two. If you like the domestic league, check it out.

Yes, that's Al Clark's site.
His admin handle there is the same as his twitter handle: aljarov.

Yeah, I've been there
… but I think the link got lost when my last computer died, so thanks, Your Highness of Norway.
I’m halfway through a season with the Fire (hey, I’m a midwesterner! gimme a break); MLS is definitely hard-mode compared with playing a Euro power. Two defensive injuries and it all goes kablooey, the tactics have to change, the team morale sags … I love Football Manager with a love that is pure and true.
Back on-topic, I’d love to take a look at some kinda Soccer Strat-O-Matic deal. Let me know if there’s anything I can do to help.
That sounds fantastic...
As someone who grew up playing APBA and Strat-O, I’ve always thought board games had a certain special quality that software versions couldn’t match. I’ll try to be there for part of the test.
You should check out Card Kingdom
over in Ballard. It’s got a huuuuuge tabletop scene, I’m sure you could get something going on there.
Thanks, I'll add it to the list.
Really do want to get some more public demonstrations out after the convention is over.
