Nos Audietis, Episode 38: The Winds Of Change

The offseason is now kicking into gear as training camp is open and the Seattle Sounders' first cuts should be announced shortly. In this week's episode of Nos Audietis, we discuss the Sounders' new partnership with the Tacoma Tide and their subsequent rebranding as Sounders U-23. The team will play in the PDL and give Sounders Academy products an opportunity to stay close to come during the offseason.
We also take a look at how that partnership could affect the Sounders Women and Aaron declares his desire to see more attention to be focused in that direction, something that gained some significance with news that the WPS has suspended its 2012 season.
Also on the docket this week is discussion of the MLS All-Star Game and the lack of United States men's national team games being played in the Pacific Northwest. Jeremiah and Aaron mildly disagree about their views on the All-Star Game and, shockingly, agree that it's high time that the USMNT head back to our neck of the woods.
One programming note: Nos Audietis has decided to join the cool kids over at NASN, home of Best Soccer Show. We're also actively looking for sponsors, now that we have a fancy new studio. If you're interested, shoot us an email to NosAudietis(at)gmail(dot)com.

I’d like to follow up with this: http://goalwa.wordpress.com/2012/01/28/the-wash-sounders-deserve-praise-for-adopting-minor-league-clubs/
Please understand that no Sounders money is going to these independently operated teams, directly. It’s a brand-share.
hm, that's a little different from what I've been told

There are a lot of legal / sponsorship stipulations in regards
to the use of the crest and the uniforms, and of course the Sounders also “granted” permission for the hiring of Amy Carnell and Darren Sawatzky. At no point have the U23 / Women owners (Smith, McElroy) ever suggested to me that they are getting anything else from the Sounders, except hopes they will help with spreading the word.
It may not be in a cash payment
But there’s clearly a real cost associated with the partnership from the sounders perspective. It’s not as if they just said “go ahead and use our branding” and that was that.

Please explain the 'real cost'
as it has been explained to you then. The Sounders had no desire to spend money on this outside of the power of their brand, AFAIK. The cost of jerseys is a big expense, and that is coming from them. However, the U23s / Women can’t have their own shirt sponsor, but must wear Xbox and also follow other branding guidelines.
I've been told the Sounders are spending about 100k
I didn’t get an itemized list, but that was the number I was told. I’m sure it includes stuff like jerseys and coaches.

Halfway through listening, great so far.
I always rock out to Dano’s music at the beginning.
OT: Twitter watch RE cuts. Looks like Sodade has NOT been cut: from his twitter “Just landed in Arizona, first thing I noticed……. The sun!”
Not really surprising, wasn’t exactly expecting him to be cut. Just some confirmation. Anyone else hear leaks like this?
La Vecchia Signora Forever!
Yeah
Sodade is the one draftee who I absolutely knew wouldn’t be cut, certainly not at this stage.

He hasn't shown much in camp
I only know one player cut and I would rather Seattle kept him than Sodade

Hm. I haven't been at training, but judging on paper and from some brief videos he looks like he has potential at least.
Especially with Estrada and Levesque possibly playing at RB, and OBW’s return pretty uncertain. He’d essentially provide depth for Fucito/Ochoa. Seems like a no-brainer to at least keep him through the first round of cuts.
Are you at liberty to say who the unfortunate player is?

I was talking more about position than ability
Since I can’t really judge yet on the latter.

Wait, okay
Jason Banton has also tweeted that he’s in Arizona.

Just to play devil's advocate here:
If the Sounders were to do a study that showed, definitively, that the Sounders pick up 2k unique (and as-yet-uncontacted) email contacts and 500-1k season ticket holders per season after a midseason friendly with a top club, would you support it?
It’s the FO’s opinion that continuing to grow the season ticket holder base each year is a priority.
Cross-pollination
Fitness coach David Tenney has said that he picked up some good ideas about application of newer training technologies from one of the visiting friendly teams. It seemed that Sigi relished the chance to rub shoulders with Sir Alex. Perhaps there is something to be gained by seeing how the best clubs in the world operate.
What would best facilitate this cross-pollination would be if the top Euro team to be named held a week or two long mid summer preseason residency at Starfire. Another reason for Starfire to be upgraded.
Well sure.
But I don’t buy that for a second.

I took friends to games last year when my wife was working
3 of them (4 seats total) are new STHs this season.
0 of the three I took with me to see Manchester United bought STHs.
So if anything I would say the better selling points are Dave’s “soccer evangelism theory” take a friend to a regular MLS game, instead.
I wouldn't be surprised if others had similar results
Basically…. the friendlies are boring. The only reason to even go is “Wow, I got to see _ play in Seattle,” which although good, is not what brings you back. Let’s face it, goals in games that count create a chemical situation similar to drugs for many of us… NYRB game last year (up two, let in two, then Roger FTW), or KC, or crapids, or either road derby game, that creates addiction. And let’s be honest, we’re all addicted to certain degrees. That’s why some of us are wondering so much about which potential fringe players are in Arizona right now.
You do all the work for us, Honey Badger, and we'll just eat whatever you find.
I'm an example
The Chelsea friendly directly led to me becoming an sth in year two. I am not a fan of friendlies, but it got me in the door. I have evangelised in 4 more sth’s since then, as well.

Definitely not saying it doesn't happen
Just sharing my belief that whatever evangelism happens at friendlies can be accomplished at other games, and mostly does.

same story.
The big name club gave me an excuse to attend a game. Loved the team but the atmosphere sold it. May not have gone to a mls v mls game as soon. However counter point is the greatly price upper deck seats for RYRB and San Jose this year.

I really doubt they are picking up 500-1k new STHs...
Just because of the friendly and as someone else said, those people would just as easily be converted by going to a regular season game. I’m not saying it’s a bad business decision to have friendlies. I’m saying it’s a soccer decision that I’d like to see made differently.

MLS All Stars vs Mexican All Stars
There was a proposal on the MLS site for the MLS All Star game to be a match against the Mexican league All Stars. That is a game that would have a huge draw and actually makes sense in that both teams are made up of players who don’t routinely play together. And it differs from the national teams because the lineups would be made from club rosters.
I'd love the MLS AllStars
against what ever crap squad the New York Cosmos could scrounge together.

As far as friendlies that won't happen
I’d love to see the Sounders vs. the US Women’s National Team. It’s tough to judge because of the lack of common opponents, but it seems like they’re at least in enough of the same ballpark skill wise to not end up as a Manchester level blow out in either direction.
Of course (other than the whole national team thing) FIFA is deathly afraid of cooties so women can’t be allowed on the same pitch.
The Men Would Kill Them
There is a huge difference between the physical ability of men and women. Read the book “Andy Roddick Beat Me with a Frying Pan” and you’ll see why this is a bad idea.

The NHL finally does something right
I think in a couple of years maybe 5 after the 20th team and a but more growth pick two Captains. Then like the NHL does have a player draft of the other all star noms. Until then I like the both the Cosmos idea and the Mexico All Stars. I just wish that a date that doesn’t conflict with other competitions could be found.
Is it wrong to stand for 90 minutes in your living room during away games?

I would like to encourage the drunk podcasting after games idea that came up at the end.
Make it happen.
I also look forward to this!
Our very own “homegrown” post-game show! Hopefully you’ll be able to decipher our drunken emails to go along with.
The USMNT played in the 2009 Gold Cup in Seattle,
the opponent was Grenada, not Guatemala.
