As crazy nutso as it may sound, it really does look like the Philadelphia Union have traded Sebastien Le Toux to the Vancouver Whitecaps. They are apparently getting allocation money in return. That's a player who has scored 25 goals and assisted on 20 others in the past two years people. What is Peter Nowak doing?

Somewhere in Tibet...

Why would they do that?

He’s clearly trying to create Red Bull South

Nowak just thought dominating this league was too easy

and he wanted to add a degree of difficulty by making totally illogical personnel moves before every season. Wait until next season when they cut all but 11 players off the team 2 days before First Kick!

by Nevtelen on Jan 31, 2012 9:18 AM PST up reply actions

On the tiniest hint of a bright side... at least he's on the Caps

not the Timbers. Nowak has done as many stupid things as he has good in Philly.

It was a play on his book title

but a 1-3-7 would technically be an inverted pyramid, albeit rather flat.

I would love to see Le Toux return to us.

but seriously, I don’t think we would have a spot for him at the moment. We have Montero who is pretty much guaranteed. and it would be nice to think Le Toux could come in and take the second forward spot. But what would happen to the developement of Ochoa/Fucito/Cato/White ? We have too many forwards to add Le Toux at this point.

by brandinho on Jan 30, 2012 11:28 PM PST up reply actions

A trade involving Ochoa or Fucito going to Philly might have made sense

But maybe Philly wanted allocation money, which we do not have to spare. Also, who knows if the Sounders were even interested.

Anyway, it is a moot point now.

by AAAA on Jan 31, 2012 3:08 AM PST up reply actions

Don't think we know nearly enough about Ochoa ...

To know if he’d be worth trading for LeToux. Who knows? He’s young and could be very good up top with Montero in behind

I would not imagine that any one of our forwards would have be enough

Except for Montero of course, but we wouldn’t be trading him.

Anyway, moot point now.

by AAAA on Jan 31, 2012 8:24 AM PST up reply actions

It's not in soccer.

Sports is a little broad. 25 is young for baseball, probably hockey too. It’s practically a baby in golf years!

by moyerLIVES on Jan 31, 2012 8:09 PM PST up reply actions

Well he's also played significantly more minutes than those 4.... combined

LeToux 3060 minutes

Ochoa 301
Fucito 1568
White 517
Cato 0

We’ve only had a tiny glimpse of the possibilities with Ochoa and White. Fucito the only one that is kind of a known player. Not too hard to prove more than people who don’t get many minues…

I think Ochoa, White, Cato, or Fucito have the potential to be more useful to the Sounders than LeToux.

by majora999 on Jan 31, 2012 2:29 PM PST up reply actions   1 recs

You wouldn't swap out any one of Ochoa, White, Cato, or Fucito for Le Toux?

I just don’t think that makes any sense. I suppose we’ll see how it goes at the end of the season.

by SoundersForever on Jan 31, 2012 8:44 PM PST up reply actions

Le Toux's best position is Montero's best position

It would make no sense for the Sounders to have both of them. If somehow they acquired Le Toux, it would almost certainly make more sense for them to flip him for a player they would use more often.

by ubelmann on Jan 31, 2012 9:00 PM PST up reply actions

No actually I wouldn't

Seeing what little Ochoa was able to do while he was:
1. not fully fit
2. carrying an extra few pounds
3. only played limited minutes.

Two goals was pretty good, and I think he can do similar this year throughout a whole season.

I would probably trade White for LeToux mostly because he is still very questionable as to whether he can play again or not.

Cato is building for the future, and Fucito has proven he can score goals when it’s needed. He still have one of the best PP90 on the team over the last two years. It’s still kind of a small sample size, but it seems everything in soccer stats wise is that way.

You have to wonder how much allocation space they gave up for this.

Will they have enough space left for any depth?

Sounders 'til I die

by SounderJunkie on Jan 31, 2012 12:52 AM PST reply actions

My question is where do you play him

IMO Seba is best when played up top as a ST. Are they going for the french connection with Hasseli, or paired with Camilo, or on the wing? I cant imagine that they would trade for him to be bench depth. He’s not as effective on the wing as he is up top and neither is Camilo from what I remember. So one of them will have be coming off the bench. Vancouver and Philly trades make little sense to me. Last year for Harvey when you already have Rochat and now this. Van needs more quality at CM not FWD.

by Colin Johnson on Jan 31, 2012 2:08 AM PST reply actions

Have to wonder if there was some disagreement between Le Toux and Novak

Trades and transfers that don’t seem to make sense sometimes result from personal disagreements that cannot be worked out.

We might never know.

Can anyone make sense of this deal?

I don’t follow “allocation money” as closely as some….

hope he leaves those shooting boots he found in Philadelphia. I will be happy to give him a good polite welcome to Seattle, then beat Vancouver with or without him.

An interesting tidbit in there

is Seba left the Bolton trial immediately after his scheduled time was up and didn’t seem interested in extending it. Seems a bit odd. I don’t follow EPL enough to know, is Owen Coyle not a particularly personable gent, or perhaps not so tactically proficient?

Its possible he felt it was better for him and his career to stay

Maybe it was clear that Le Toux wasn't going to make the team...

…and he knew that he needed to get ready for a likely move within MLS.

He seemed, at least to me

genuinely surprised by the move. Or perhaps I misread his comment to say more than it meant.

According to this

He didn’t even really want to go to Bolton, and was pushed to do it by the Philly FO. Looks like he may have gotten the Tommy DeVito treatment.

Am I the only one who isn't that impressed by Le Toux?

He’s got some real positives, for sure. He’ll run all day, so fans are going to love him almost no matter what. He’s gone 7/7 from the mark, which is good, but league average from the mark is about 85%. He’s been in good health the last couple years, allowing him to get plenty of minutes.

At the same time, I think his health and converted PKs—while obviously good things—have maybe made him look a little more valuable than he really is. If you look at points per 90 minutes last year but take out PK goals, Le Toux was at 0.47 P(-PKG)PM. Good, sure, but consider that Montero was at 0.82 in the same statistic, Rosales was at 0.82, Neagle was at 0.63, and Nyassi was at 0.57. Le Toux was fourth on his team in that stat—behind Mwanga, Torres, and Ruiz. It wouldn’t be that crazy for Mwanga to play 3000 minutes next year and put up 20 points like Le Toux did this year.

Levesque—who has many detractors—had 0.42 PPM in league play last year—nearly as good as Le Toux when you take away Le Toux’s PKGs. Evans was also at 0.42 PPM last year, taking away his 2 PKGs, is constantly criticized for not adding enough to the offense, and isn’t even a forward.

Lastly, Le Toux’s base salary last year was $155K, and his guaranteed compensation last year was $179K. That’s not insignificant. By trading him for allocation money, Philly is opening up quite a bit of cap room to replace him with. I don’t know whether the $155K or $179K counts towards the cap, but let’s say it’s the $155K and Philly only gets $45K in allocation money. Would you rather have Le Toux or $200K in cap space to spend elsewhere? Even without Le Toux, I think Philly’s attack seems pretty promising, though young. They’ve got Mwanga, Torres, Adu, Okugo, and McInerney, and they’re not all that inexpensive (especially Adu, obviously.) It’s a risk to go with the youth, but I think they could have an even more dynamic attack this year.

by ubelmann on Jan 31, 2012 9:53 AM PST reply actions   1 recs

LeToux is good, but limited player IMHO

LeToux can be a player that leads an offense, but he needs to play in that withdrwan forward spot with plenty of room and space to operate. When he has that space he does a great job getting good looks and creating assists for teammates. However, he really can’t create his own shot or space.

Nowak moved him away from that role last season and his numbers suffered for the first half of the year. Nowak doesn’t compromise about what he wants from players so my guess is that he wanted to play LeToux on the wing again this season and LeToux disagreed.

by Dizzo on Jan 31, 2012 10:23 AM PST up reply actions

That seems about right

Where I really thought he seemed limited when he was in Seattle was his inability to create his own shot or create space for himself. So many times it seemed like he’d get the ball in the box and nothing would happen.

It seems like having Le Toux/Adu could easily become a Fredy/Freddie problem. Adu’s probably going to be best when he has the ball in attacking positions and can dish it off to a teammate, which is the same space that Le Toux probably needs to be his best. Additionally, Adu is probably better at creating space for himself than Le Toux.

by ubelmann on Jan 31, 2012 10:28 AM PST up reply actions

11 goals in his last 14 games.

Whatever happened at the end of last season (re: spacing, shot creation) worked quite well.
