And don’t bet on the draft becoming any less super, as this year’s two-round format may not be etched in stone, according to the Commissioner.
"I hope to expand it in the years to come," he said, "as opposed to any alternative."
Garber Talks Draft with MLS Insider
That quote says to me that the number of internationals will increase in future years. It probably also means that rounds 3-6 (aka Supplemental Rounds 1-4) are on the same day or day after the SuperDraft.

Wouldn't the future growth of the
Academies start to make the “super” draft less and less significant?
If they add a U20 international
or two for every HGP signed does that reduce the significance of the draft?

I thought international players entered the league primarily via Discovery Claims
Would those youth internationals be only those that teams did not have existing claims on?
Say Ever Alvarado has claims on him by two teams and the MLS attempts to sign him to a contract for the SuperDraft, do both the teams with claims for him have to pass on him (and his contract) first before he would go into the draft?
Normally internationals enter through Discovery
but John Rooney, Jaoa Plata and others last year did not. And 7 more this year will not.
None had Discovery claims on them, were scouted by the League, have contracts already and are now in the Draft.

I'm sure MLS COULD expand the draft this way...
I’m not so sure it’s a good idea though.

My initial thought is that...
…while academies will help in identifying promising young talent, in the near future, MLS is limited to 17-20ish teams in the US and simply won’t have the infrastructure to scout the entire US. College soccer, flawed as it may be, gives a bunch of overlooked kids a chance to show what they’re made of, and as long as coaching there continues to improve, then the draft could remain a valuable source of talent for the league.
Acadamies only cover small area of USA
Twenty 75 mile radius academy catchment areas = 88,000 sq. miles. Area of USA is 3,790,000 sq. miles. Even factoring in kids being recruited into academies from surrounding areas and considering that the academies are all in high population density areas that still leaves lots of potential talent to draft from.
Do you know how many people live within...
a 75-mile radius of the home depot center?
The return of THIERRY
I'd guess about 10 million near LA
If the average catchment population were 3 million, that’s 60 million. That leaves another 240 million left out of Academy areas. And each academy can only capture a few handfuls of kids at each age group. There will be lots of late bloomers, undiscovered talents and kids on competing clubs left within the catchment areas.
Two rounds is perfect for now and for the near future
Until the top 15 picks are near sure-things, and until 2nd rounders aren’t being cut in training camp, there’s no need for further slots.
Speaking of training camp cuts
Bright Dike (now of Timbers) was a first rounder who couldn’t make it out of Crew camp.
By the way, plenty of 1st round picks in MLB, NHL and even the NBA never make the “bigs”

The NFL seems like the most "sure thing" but they also have a rule that says players have to be 3 years removed from High School before being draft eligible
The NBA is one year. MLB is zero years. MLS is less than zero years.
That order is also how I’d rank the leagues in how well draft position predicts future success.
Only problem with that
Is about 95 percent of the kids in the MLS SuperDraft are juniors or seniors. Lack of seasoning is not the issue. Most of the kids are who they are by the time they come out of college. If anything, we should be training them earlier.

This will be the last senior class that didn't have local USSF/MLS Academies as an option

NHL and NBA have razor-thin rosters
They don’t have room for nearly anything but the guys that will see floor/ice action game in and game out.
As for baseball, it’s the truth, but the track record for the top 15 is pretty good. And of the number one overall picks, only two in the last 50 years have failed to make the big leagues.
