why is there a home field advantage?

This focuses on American football, but applies to all sports. I've often been skeptical of claims that Seattle has one of the best HFAs in MLS. We have the best crowds, but we seem to have the same home-road differentials as all the other teams. I'd be curious about sidereal's thoughts on this.
