It's hard to criticize Sigi Schmid. Over the decade + as an MLS coach he has proven himself to be one of the two or three best coaches in the league's history. The other two in the conversation both coached the US National Team. But there were some things that went wrong with the Sounders on Sunday and learnings from that performance must be carried forward into Leg Two. There is also little doubt that they will.

The LA Galaxy were a team as talented as any. Preseason picks had the team of Beckham, Keane, Donovan, Gonzalez and Franklin (let’s not forget those two Rookie of Year players) as the MLS Cup and even CCL favorites. Along the way an actual season happened and the Seattle Sounders finished higher than LA. Sunday night at 6 PM on ESPN the two teams will meet again.

Beat LA. It is a simple phrase. One first familiar here in Seattle due to the Sonics and Lakers rivalry. Here it also harbors a bit of the provincialism displayed during the 80s and "California Invasion." LA is one of Seattle's dragons. A rival not based on locale, but on success over the local side. It is time for that success to end.

LA's fourth place finish meant that they played an extra match when compared to the Sounders. Seattle will have one day less rest. What could that mean for Leg One of the Western Conference Finals?
