Sounders Women won't be part of new professional league

U.S. Soccer has chosen a group led by Bill Predmore's group to be their Seattle team, instead of the Sounders Women.

The Sounders Women will be back in 2013, but it won't be as part of the new women's professional soccer league. A year after playing to sold out crowds and sporting a team with players like Hope Solo and Alex Morgan, the Sounders Women will return to the USL's W-League and play their games at Starfire Sports Complex. It is highly unlikely that any United States national team players would remain with the Sounders, as they were never being paid to play there in the first place.

Seattle will be represented in the new league, instead, by a team operated by local businessman Bill Predmore.

"Congratulations to Bill with the new team and league," Sounders Women co-owner Lane Smith said in a team release. "Seattle is a fantastic market for soccer and the Seattle Sounders Women wish them the best in the upcoming inaugural season."

At one point, it was believed that the USL would have some role in helping run the new league. That apparently never came to fruition. The USL will continue to run the W-League, which is largely amateur and have teams in several local markets.
