It was not a monkey, it was a dragon that breathed diamonds and the finely placed shot of Mario Martinez put the Seattle Sounders past the beasts that haunted them for three years. Martinez shot from the left flank was set-up by a strong Brad Evans run and a well placed pseudo-cross by Fredy Montero. It found the small weakness in Nick Rimando's strong game and put the beast to bed.
Like all matches (but the 2011 Playoffs) it was a tight contest. Defensive efforts certainly outweighed those on offense. Both keepers were the story. Rimando's first half was as good as his 90 in Seattle. Michael Gspurning was the man of the second half as his saves were key to the win.
Martinez will go down as a Sounders legend as he found the weakness in the Rimando beast. But he was not the only strong performer, nor is his the only legend. Tiffert joined the zombies in Rave Green. Gspurning was beautiful. The stories of the evening will be told for years. It was a match that relieved pressure from the minds of the fans.
Whatever it takes.
