Proposal:
| Johnson | Montero | |||
| Zakuani | ||||
| Tiffert | ||||
| Caskey/Rose | Alonso | Evans | ||
| Ianni | New CB | Hurtado | ||
| Gspurning | ||||
What I like:
- Can waive Mauro, Leo, Johansson, Burch (clears up quite a bit of cap space, DP slot, and a few international spots)
- Eliminates the need to find outside backs (Wilmer Crisanto/Ever Alverado)
- Plays to our strengths--SSFC have a lot of midfielders, and are talent heavy in the position. This allows the team to essentially play with 5 mids (albeit in slightly strange positions)
- Allows us to resign Ozzie and/or Eddie as a DP when they inevitable want that much money
- We have swiss-army-knife-type mids that are (a) hungry and (b) high effort guys who could play the demanding wingback position
- The defensive commitment we get from midfield (esp. Ozzie, Evans, Caskey and Tiffert) seems like a good fit for three-at-the-back formation
- In the event we need a late winner/equalizer: replace a CB with a forward, easy shift to 4-4-2 (or more traditional formations)
- Other teams won't know how to defend us (at least initially)
- Sigi has coached the 3/5 at the back before
What I dislike:
- Requires us to find a big CB to protect us from inherent weaknesses of the formation (crosses from the wings)
- We will need depth at CB (Evans and Scott will not cut it, even assuming we find the perfect mystery acquisition)
- No more Mauro
- New formation for the team to learn; though philosophy will largely stay the same
Conclusion: I think this can work, and I think the positives outweigh the negatives.
Discuss. What have I missed? Am I deluded?
