Next year's formation talk, 3-3-2-2: A proposal

Proposal:

Johnson Montero
Zakuani
Tiffert
Caskey/Rose Alonso Evans
Ianni New CB Hurtado
Gspurning

What I like:

  1. Can waive Mauro, Leo, Johansson, Burch (clears up quite a bit of cap space, DP slot, and a few international spots)
  2. Eliminates the need to find outside backs (Wilmer Crisanto/Ever Alverado)
  3. Plays to our strengths--SSFC have a lot of midfielders, and are talent heavy in the position. This allows the team to essentially play with 5 mids (albeit in slightly strange positions)
  4. Allows us to resign Ozzie and/or Eddie as a DP when they inevitable want that much money
  5. We have swiss-army-knife-type mids that are (a) hungry and (b) high effort guys who could play the demanding wingback position
  6. The defensive commitment we get from midfield (esp. Ozzie, Evans, Caskey and Tiffert) seems like a good fit for three-at-the-back formation
  7. In the event we need a late winner/equalizer: replace a CB with a forward, easy shift to 4-4-2 (or more traditional formations)
  8. Other teams won't know how to defend us (at least initially)
  9. Sigi has coached the 3/5 at the back before

What I dislike:

  1. Requires us to find a big CB to protect us from inherent weaknesses of the formation (crosses from the wings)
  2. We will need depth at CB (Evans and Scott will not cut it, even assuming we find the perfect mystery acquisition)
  3. No more Mauro
  4. New formation for the team to learn; though philosophy will largely stay the same

Conclusion: I think this can work, and I think the positives outweigh the negatives.
Discuss. What have I missed? Am I deluded?
