Perhaps I'm glad Nguyen didn't end up with Seattle.
It appears someone missed the memo.

Whatever this was, it's gone now.
Anyone got screencap/gist of it?

Well that's unfortunate.
Lee, that shouldn’t be meant in any way.

I wish I could uber-rec that
I am not a Supporter | I am not a Fan | I am a Sounder
Sounder At Heart | Follow Dave on Twitter @bedirthan
This is another example of something Paulson said recently
I paraphrase
Everything you say on twitter is a press conference
If you wouldn’t say it in front of a mic, don’t say it on twitter.
I am not a Supporter | I am not a Fan | I am a Sounder
Sounder At Heart | Follow Dave on Twitter @bedirthan
for what it's worth
Bob Lenarduzzi said #WhitecapsFC strongly condemn Lee Nguyen’s Twitter comment, “something we never want to see again” No further discipline

One thing I'll say
is that I’m glad they’re not instituting a twitter muzzle. I think twitter is great for athletes it can really provide an interesting picture about the person behind the player. Otherwise we wouldn’t have things like Brad’s Q&A with Gspurnie, and today I learned about this little exchange involving Seba:

Hopefully the Whitecaps use this as a learning moment for the whole team and Lee does finally figure it out. Perhaps he’s getting there already.

Good on him.
That’s as good an apology as you can expect.

He's growing up right before our eyes
And that’s alright, everyone was/is young and ignorant, just gotta learn ’em.
We are all growing up
Confession: I used to use the word “gay” to connote something too refined for my tastes. I don’t anymore.
REALLY not trying to stir the pot here
and I know this is a current event/hot topic, but this really just sounds like bro-humor to me and not something any more than that. I feel like that word along with many others has become meaningless from what its original definition was, depending on the context.

Meaningless to the people that are using it, sure.
Not to other people that may be watching, which was kind of the point.

They don't have to watch/listen/follow
They watch by choice. If you’re choosing to be offended, it’s on you at that point.
I'm so positive, you'll need AZT later.

BS. Total, total BS.
“Choose to be offended”? Seriously? Put yourself in the shoes of a Whitecaps fan that just so happens to be gay. How do you think something like this is going to make you feel?

that said...
If someone did it in a public forum, i would happily call them out on it.

Twitter is a broadcast medium
not narrowcast. The ability to RT (and this was, quite a bit) makes it essentially the same as TV or radio or a website rather than a private conversation among friends.

We should care
It’s about changing a culture. The thing is, it’s cultural marginalization that runs deep with a lot of people. So deep, in fact, that it’s in the very vernacular of many people and they don’t even know they’re doing it. It’s probably true that Nguyen didn’t mean anything by it. I believe that. But the thing is, it doesn’t matter. It betrays that he is unconcerned about the fact that he’s a in a privileged role as a straight male in North American society, and it is this lack of concern that makes it possible for it to be 2012 CE and still have a large chunk of our population marginalized for nothing more than their hormones. Nothing will change until those that are in a privileged position align themselves to work alongside the marginalized. Thus, self policing is necessary.

The way I am reading this
you are basically saying the same thing as Dave/Aaron above? If so I agree. But I still stick by what I am saying about the definition becoming meaningless depending on context and the people involved. That word still does hurt the same way other words hurt when used in the certain context. But between two friends (in a non-public setting) I don’t see the problem here. That said, as Aaron and Dave pointed out, this being in a very public setting makes this a problem.

Right.
What he says in private with his friends is totally irrelevant to me. I say some horribly offensive things in private with friends that I would never say in public, because people don’t know me well enough to know my intent.

Same here
In my original post I did not take into account the public-ness of the situation. Glad we are all on the same page.

Relevant to this post
I think Louis C.K. actually did one of the best bits on the use of “fag.” Watch from 4:50 on for the relevant part, though the whole thing is good if you don’t mind the language and want the full context.

Nguyen are people going to learn?
Comments on Twitter show no context, everyone should choose their words wisely. Especially if your populairty is tied to your employer.
Go banana!
lol
At the comment “it can only be meant on way.” Is there literally a word which the definition has changed more often then that one.
