Sounders Beat Reduced Atlante Side In Preseason Closed Game

In Seattle Sounders FC final road preseason game they overcame last minute stadium and opposition lineup adjustments to beat Atlante five to two. As the Rave Green return to Seattle their co-leading preseason scorers are Fredy Montero (two goals today, three on preseason) and David Estrada (one goal and assist today, three goals on preseason). The game was called at 85 minutes due to poor lighting.

Sigi Schmid's planned pattern leading into the CONCACAF Champions League saw a new partner for Montero at forward as Estrada started and went 74 minutes. Sammy Ochoa finished the rest of the shortened match. Due to a red card Alvaro Fernandez was replaced at half by Christian Sivebaek. All other substitutions were in the defensive core.

The Sounders move to 4-0-2 in preseason with their next match being the free one against Jaguares de Chiapas at CenturyLink Field on February 29th at 7 PM. The team will be taking donations for their charity partners for the match.

Schmid continues to be impressed with the play of David Estrada saying in the team press release;

I thought David did well. I thought he showed, he opened the game up for us, made a lot of runs in the corners. I thought he combined well with [Fredy] Montero. He scored a good goal. He was active, he was involved, he held the ball up for us. David's made big strides and I was very pleased with what he did today.

Recent trade acquisition Eddie Johnson did not play. Sigi Schmid's comments and match statistics follow;

Quotes from Head Coach Sigi Schmid
(On the last second changes...) "We're disappointed because the agreement or understanding between ourselves and Atlante was one thing, and today everything sort of changed. From the field to who we were playing, etc. Our expectation is certainly that Jaguares de Chiapas is not going to do that, they're going to be professional, which we know they are. We're just disappointed that the opposition and the circumstances were not as we understood them."

(On how they handled the odd circumstances...) "With everything, our philosophy as a club has been, 'Okay, it is what it is, and now we're going to make the best of the situation.' We were going to go out and make the best of the situation, get our fitness in, play soccer. I thought we did a good job, it's just tough when you know you're better than the opposition. You lose that little bit of four, five percent of concentration sometimes. But overall, I thought our guys did a pretty good job."

(On David Estrada...) "I thought David did well. I thought he showed, he opened the game up for us, made a lot of runs in the corners. I thought he combined well with [Fredy] Montero. He scored a good goal. He was active, he was involved, he held the ball up for us. David's made big strides and I was very pleased with what he did today."

(On Fredy Montero...) "Obviously, he did well. He hit a great free kick, and the header he scored was one where he caught the goalkeeper off the line. It was a great header to the back post. Fredy is always going to get his best fitness by playing games-he loves to play. That's why we kept him on for 90 minutes. He worked and he was active. He showed underneath the way we expect him to, so I was pleased with the things he did. He had a couple good through-balls that set some people up...I was pleased with what Fredy did."

(On the team's fitness...) "It was alright fitness-wise. Again, due to the change in circumstances, we only played a 40-minute second half because there's no lights here. By the time we were informed that they wanted to kick off at four o'clock, we had already had our pre-game meal and a lot of stuff set, so it made difficult to change things. There were guys that got 85 minutes worth of fitness in today, so that's good."

(On what players stood out...) "Christian [Sivebaek] came in and did some decent things. I thought Sammy Ochoa did alright coming in, holding the ball up for us. Adam Johansson had a good spell, when he played I thought he played well...In the second half, they got a goal which we didn't deal well with-we didn't defend well on that particular goal...that sort of re-motivated us for a little bit. Then we got two goals right after that, bang-bang. Like I said, that little five percent edge comes off the game then, so you have to discount a little bit of the second half."

(On evaluating the team two weeks before the first game...) "We're trying to make it the best situation we can. We're hoping, obviously, to have a good crowd attend that game and watch our game next Wednesday, because I know the guys are looking forward to that. I think that'll help put that edge and that motivation there. I'm pleased where we are fitness-wise, pleased with some of the things we've done soccer-wise on the field. I think we've shown when we're supposed to score goals, we have scored goals. I'm just disappointed today that we gave up two because we've been doing a good job of not giving anything up. We have to get back to that next Wednesday."

The team has yet to announce TV programming for the Community Shield

They did an odd hybrid magazine show/play-by-play in the past.

Channel 106 shows something...

so it seems like at least something will be on TV. Hated the hybrid stuff.

Hybrid again...

This is the format they’ve decided to go with again this year. Live airing on KING/KONG, with replays on ROOT Sports.

Curious… I know the hybrid “Season Preview/Community Shield” show isn’t popular, but if you could only have one or the other, would you rather a full blown pre-season special, or the full match coverage? Personally I’d love to see a season preview show in full, and (since the CS is free) not televise the game at all and hope for more butts in the seats that way.

Just to make it clear, I'm talking about this quote
it’s just tough when you know you’re better than the opposition. You lose that little bit of four, five percent of concentration sometimes.

Stupid?

I am shocked they agreed to play us in the first place in the middle of their season, and I certainly didn’t expect we’d get their best team, maybe a mix of some starters and subs that need experience, the changing time/location thing is pretty tacky though. I am also shocked that the Jaguares are flying up to Seattle in mid-season for a friendly. We must be paying them well.

Sounders didn't expect their best team either

but it sounds like they didn’t even get a second best team

Red Card

What were the two red cards for? One for us and one for them, right?

by Edward Bushnell Jr. on Feb 22, 2012 6:16 PM PST reply actions

Has anyone found out why. I have been training to find a reason why? He doesn’t seem like the red card kind of guy.

“SEA – Mauro Rosales (caution) 42’
SEA – Alvaro Fernandez (ejection) 42’
ATL – (ejection) 42’”

Makes me think there was some sort of altercation.

Maybe Atlante ...

will qualify for CONCACAF this summer … would love to draw them and show them how we feel about their disrespect.

by exSlacker on Feb 22, 2012 6:52 PM PST reply actions

First, we would have to ...

get out of our own group, of course. No Mexican teams will be in it.

by exSlacker on Feb 22, 2012 6:53 PM PST up reply actions

so EJ injury is not minor

:|.

Did anyone ask why EJ didnt play a single minute in the game?

by Green Apple on Feb 22, 2012 9:15 PM PST reply actions

I was thinking the same thing. Hopefully it's nothing too serious.

Of course, he may be perfectly healthy and Sigi is just wanting to see Estrada get more time at forward, especially if he doesn’t feel that EJ will be fit enough to start the Santos Laguna match.

by Boz86 on Feb 22, 2012 9:31 PM PST up reply actions

A minor hammy tweak..

is not no injury. He’ll be able to do fitness work…but starting/stopping and sharp cutting is probably off the table for the very immediate future. It certainly would be a bad idea to throw him in a game situation (with adrenaline pumping – in which he’d want to prove himself)…really not worth the risk. I wouldn’t worry too much though. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him in the Jaguares game though, barring really cold weather.

by exSlacker on Feb 22, 2012 9:54 PM PST up reply actions

Hammy has nothing to do with starting/stopping

It means he can’t run full speed, and these things linger and linger unless they really take three weeks off and just sit on a stationary bike for fitness. This also shows he was not in shape, and it is hard to get in shape once you pull one. They need to sit him for a while and then he needs to really focus on getting in shape. I’m pretty sure EJ without his full speed is not as effective.

by atu81 on Feb 23, 2012 7:11 AM PST up reply actions

true on sptinting...

but you’re incorrect about starting and stopping: “Any activity associated with sprinting or sudden starting and stopping may induce the injury.”

by exSlacker on Feb 23, 2012 8:53 AM PST up reply actions

I also wonder if, had the competition been what the Sounders were thinknig it was going to be,

Eddie would have played. Based on the comments, Sigi pretty clearly didn’t think much of the quality of opponent. Why risk further injury in a game that’s not providing the requisite challenge?

by Nevtelen on Feb 22, 2012 10:14 PM PST up reply actions

Assuming is was precautionary.

Still concerned about it. Hamstrings can be tricky. I’m looking at you Edgar Martinez. Even if it’s not bad, EJ is still missing valuable time to gel with his new teammates.

So many RED cards

Isin’t anyone concerned about so many red cards we are receiving in the pre-season friendlies?

by Green Apple on Feb 22, 2012 9:16 PM PST reply actions

I'm shocked at the number

But not worried. I figure the refs are calling the games tighter during preseason to prevent injury and a red only effects the single game.

I do want to know what Flaco’s was for though.

by Derek R on Feb 22, 2012 10:02 PM PST up reply actions

I believe there

was actually a reference to just that by Sigi a week or so ago. He said that they tend to call things tighter to protect the players and that he was seeing some pretty “light” red cards.

by swansuite on Feb 23, 2012 6:21 AM PST up reply actions

So, after all the talk about how Sigi wants to consistently play a big target forward . . .

. . . we’re already down to the 5’8 160 lb guy starting next to Fredy??? Sure says something about Sammy that he doesn’t get this start. Or maybe Estrada is seriously kicking so much ass every day, that he has left Sigi no choice. Whch may give further explanation to why Fucito is gone.

by seabryan on Feb 22, 2012 10:07 PM PST reply actions

Estrada

Super interested to see more of him. I haven’t been impressed with what I’ve seen in his very limited MLS play, but the way Sigi’s talking he has really shown development this year.

Anyone who’s seen him in pre-season want to comment on his relative strengths?

I liked what I saw in the reserve matches last year

Although he primarily played attacking center mid and wing in those games. Not sure what he’s showing up front, but I’ve always felt he should be attacking more from what I’ve seen in the past.

by MicahRowe18 on Feb 23, 2012 3:38 AM PST via mobile up reply actions

I like what we're hearing

I am happy with Estrada’s emergence (if that is the case) I have criticized the FO in the past for poor draft choices and often cited Estrada as one of those (along with many draftee’s who were immedietly cut), it is nice to see that maybe he’s going to stick around and contribute some this year. Hope that is a sign to come with draft pick development, would like to see more of Tettah as well.

by atu81 on Feb 23, 2012 7:24 AM PST up reply actions

Estrada's skill set has always been relatively clear...

He’s one of the fastest players on the team. He’s extremely fit and hard-working. His technical skill and touch are good, and he strikes a decent ball. I still remember his assist on Noonan’s “first goal as a sounder” in the Boca Junior’s friendly… a perfectly-weighted flick forward onto the run on goal. His shortcomings are basically Sanna Nyassi’s – he tended to try to do a bit much by himself, letting himself be lured into poor positions on the attacking end. He didn’t find players to link up with quickly enough… hence Sigi’s comment during the preseason of his now “playing with his head up.”

If he can learn what Nyassi did not as a member of the Sounders, his physical and techinical skills are those of a good MLS attacker.

I guess everyone traveled to Cancun?

By everyone I mostly mean those signed that were in Florida and the 5 named trialists. I didn’t see anywhere that anyone said that anyone was left behind in Florida or went back to Seattle or elsewhere instead.

Sigi aid at least two by name

and we also know that Sanyang didn’t go.

This was for First XI and those on the bubble.
