Around SBN: Trent Richardson Interviews Fellow Brown Brandon Weeden

Game will be three periods, with two 45 minute "halves" and a 30 minute additional period.

Reportedly Zak will be making an appearance, though he is not starting. Follow along with Matt Gaschk through the link. This is not really a gamethread, though feel free to discuss here.

Sounders FC Starting XI – Michael Gspurning; Adam Johansson, Jhon Kennedy Hurtado, Jeff Parke, Leo Gonzalez; Mauro Rosales, Osvaldo Alonso, Brad Evans, Alvaro Fernandez; Fredy Montero, Mike Fucito.

Sounds nominally like what I'd expect the Santos line-up to look like

Everyone on that team has played together a bunch except for the clear #1 Goalie and RB.

I’m dubious about anyone starting who has not played any minutes for the Sounders before when deciding between two roughly equal players.

Vancouver’s Starting XI – Joe Cannon; Alain Rochat, Jay DeMerit, Martin Bonjour, Young-Pyo Lee; Camilo, John Thorrington, Jun Marques Davidson, Atiba Harris; Sebastien Le Toux, Eric Hassli

by agtk on Feb 6, 2012 3:14 PM PST reply actions

Indeed. From Matt Gaschk:

“4: Eric Hassli just fouled Jeff Parke on a free kick – Parke was taking the free kick … I can’t make this stuff up.”

“4: Atiba Harris is shown a yellow card for a harsh tackle on Alvaro Fernandez against the sideline. … This is getting ugly quick.”

“14: Disgraseful tackle by Martin Bonjour as he takes out Mike Fucito on a run up the left side with a knee-high boot. Bonjour gets a yellow card on the play.”

“17: Another horrible kick to the back of Alvaro Fernandez, this time by Young-Pyo Lee. Foul given at midfield and easily could have been another card.”

Why u so angry Vancouver?

by agtk on Feb 6, 2012 3:22 PM PST up reply actions

I can only imagine how angry Sigi is.

Nobody should be doing stupid crap that risks injury in a pre-season warmup like this.

I hope Vancouver has not decided

that the only way they can win Cascadia this year is by injuring key Sounders players during the preseason.

by Traevore on Feb 6, 2012 3:35 PM PST up reply actions

Brilliant strategy.

It’s not like these cards count.

crunch test

As long as nobody gets hurt.. this might get SSFC on the right page. We need to toughen up .. our season starts strong and we need to be in this

Matt's last comment

says it all:

@L-Money Could be much more – many of the Vancouver players are not fit and making bad tackles as a result. There could easily be two more on Vancouver at this point.

by Daniel Guerrero on Feb 6, 2012 3:37 PM PST reply actions

Even more telling:

“I suppose you could say the officiating has been good preparation for Champions League.”

I hope Matt's just being a homer

and exaggerating the severity of the fouls a bit.
Any one else here at the game and able to offer a second opinion?

by Traevore on Feb 6, 2012 3:41 PM PST up reply actions

Wait,

being at the game was an option?

Sounders 'til I die

Apparently

there are ~100 Sounders fans there.

Roger in for Fucito

“Roger Levesque is preparing to enter the match for Mike Fucito who has a giant cleat mark on his inner thigh from Bonjour’s earlier dangerous play.”

grrrrrrrr

by agtk on Feb 6, 2012 3:38 PM PST reply actions

LOL

“37: Fredy Montero gets a cross inot the box for Roger Levesque. The ball is punched away by Joe Cannon and Vancouver is given a goal kick.”

Are they playing pick up game rules?

No Corners; Anything over the endline goes the other way regardless of who touched it last.

"The fans are excited. And the stadium, well, it ignites with explosion."

Second lineup

Sounders FC second period lineup – Andrew Weber; Wes Feighner, Zach Scott, Andrew Duran, Marc Burch; Mike Seamon, Servando Carrasco, Andy Rose, Lamar Neagle; Sammy Ochoa, David Estrada.

by Sandra_R on Feb 6, 2012 3:53 PM PST reply actions

Christian Sivebæk expected to play?

I’m excited to see at what position and how well he plays.

by Traevore on Feb 6, 2012 3:56 PM PST up reply actions

I don't think Sivebæk played in the last practice scrimmage either

which has me worried that he’s nursing an injury.

I guess there is a 3rd period to this game though which will likely feature another entirely different lineup.

by Traevore on Feb 6, 2012 3:59 PM PST up reply actions

In one of the pics on Soundersfc.com

He’s wearing one of those flesh colored knee bandage things that Mauro wore in the Chivas match. But who knows…

Go banana!

by Disco_Stew on Feb 6, 2012 4:14 PM PST up reply actions

Interesting that it's Weber

and not Ford or Meredith. Those two better be on their A games. We’ll see who plays the third period.

by agtk on Feb 6, 2012 4:18 PM PST up reply actions

Carrasco scores!

3: Servando Carrasco collects the ball in the box and blasts it into the net for a goal. Sounders FC up 1-0 in the second period.

Vancouver 2nd lineup

Knighton; Harvey, Mitchell, Boxall, Klazura; Mattocks, Franks, Koffie, Nguyen; Chiumiento, Salgado

"Just spoke with Mike Fucito - he said that was the worst he's ever been fouled. He's wearing a lot of tape on his leg right now. We should have an update after the game or tomorrow."

BOOOOOOO. HISSSSSSS. BOOOOOOOO.

For the record it was Martin Bonjour who committed the tackle. And this is taking into account Hernandez’s elbow to Fucito’s face.

by agtk on Feb 6, 2012 4:45 PM PST reply actions   1 recs

I'm confused.

Are you talking about the US Open cup game where Fucito attacked Hernandez’s elbow with his face? I don’t see how this correlates.

Sounders 'til I die

by SounderJunkie on Feb 6, 2012 4:51 PM PST up reply actions

I meant that

this was the worst foul Fucito has suffered, including the elbow to the face. Like, this foul he suffered today was worse than that (which I do remember was (wrongly) called as a foul on Fucito).

by agtk on Feb 6, 2012 6:25 PM PST up reply actions

more from MattG on Fucito

Mike says, Yes this was worse than the Daniel Hernandez in the Open Cup game.

Sounders FC third period lineup

Bryan Meredith; Amadou Sanyang, Tim Pontius, Harlinton Gutierres, Ever Alvarado; Cordell Cato, Andrew Vanzie, Alex Caskey, Jason Banton; Roger Levesque, Babayele Sodade.

Whitecaps: Andrew Fontein; Russell Teibert, Bilal Duckett, Mitchell, Chris Estridge; Long Tan, Floyd Franks, Patrick Cregg, Michael Nanchoff; Matt Watson, Darren Mattocks.

via Matt.

by agtk on Feb 6, 2012 4:48 PM PST reply actions

Interesting.

Meredith over Ford.
Sanyang at LB(?)
Levesque at FW? Or is that Cato at forward and Roger is actually playing elsewhere… Tough to decipher.

This is bad news

for MLS. So many teams trying to raise the game and the league, and others wallowing in thug ball.

by Kohflot on Feb 6, 2012 4:50 PM PST reply actions

Perspective.

I don’t think you can draw that conclusion from the first preseason match. I’m sure lower fitness levels and general rustiness contributed to the poor quality of play and fouls.

by ryanhealy on Feb 6, 2012 5:54 PM PST up reply actions

Exactly - I highly doubt Vancouver is playing thug-ball with their line-up

Can you see Camilo muscling anyone around? Or LeToux? Or… whoever they have that’s not a striker?

by Nevtelen on Feb 6, 2012 6:39 PM PST up reply actions

You are being ironic, right?

Pretty sure that lower fitness levels and general rustiness weren’t a factor in the 7th game of 2011 when Mullan broke Zakuani’s leg in two places, or the game last August 30 when Fucito was cracked in the face by Hernandez, or the game on Sept. 17 when Rosales was taken out, or the MLS Playoff game last year with RSL nearly broke Evans’ ankle.

The MLS has traditionally been a dangerous place to play, regardless of the fitness level of the guys who are playing. This may change as the league’s improving finances enable the league to (a) hire better referees and (b) hire players who depend on skill rather than toughness to stay on the field.

(For the record, last year the Sounders were 4th in the league with fouls committed. The Timbers were last. Of course, there is a difference between committing a foul and sending someone to the hospital.)

by Choskasoft on Feb 6, 2012 10:55 PM PST up reply actions

I'd like these claims to be quantified.
The MLS has traditionally been a dangerous place to play

I’d like to see Per Match Injury, Per Match Fouls, and Per Match Cards across multiple leagues. I could be wrong but I suspect MLS isn’t as deserving of this accusation as you think.

by ryanhealy on Feb 7, 2012 7:06 AM PST up reply actions

Even if you think MLS is more dangerous than your average league (which I do not, at all)

that doesn’t effect the probability that the excessive number of fouls in this game were largely due to poor fitness and rustiness. It’s by far the most likely explanation.

by Aaron Campeau on Feb 7, 2012 9:58 AM PST up reply actions

Not to mention pressure

All of the Whitecaps are fighting for spots under a new coach. I’m sure there’s plenty of pressure up north right now as they try to sort out their careers under their 3rd coach in under a year and a half.

by Dizzo on Feb 7, 2012 11:10 AM PST up reply actions

it

ends up be 1:1 but good grief what an ugly game.

by gstommylee on Feb 6, 2012 5:30 PM PST reply actions

Well considering the Caps got their goal on a non-call offside

I am taking a positive view of how the back four and Gspurnie did.
I just hope Fucito is okay. From the view of a “spring training” equivalent game they can look pretty ugly at times.

by chrisso on Feb 6, 2012 8:39 PM PST up reply actions

Sounds like no puncture wound after all

Don Ruiz of the Tribune reported this morning that Fucito is scraped and walking but no puncture.

Schmid said Fucito suffered "a raking of the cleats" in the game against Vancouver, but not the puncture wound that had been reported. The cuts were wrapped, and Fucito was walking Tuesday.

Banton's Sending Off

Guy trying to make the team.. gets sent off during a preseason scrimmage… I know it was an ugly ugly game.. but anyone think that hurts his chances?

by BaltimoreIslander on Feb 7, 2012 8:24 AM PST reply actions

I saw the replay...

it was an aggressive approach..but the studs-up nature of it that got him a red was truly just him losing his footing…his feet popped up from under him. It should not have been a red. You can see the video on MLS…his foul is near the end. I can’t imagine that the staff will hold that against him.

by exSlacker on Feb 7, 2012 8:47 AM PST up reply actions

Question - in lineup 2, Rose, Seamon and Carrasco ....

My understanding is that they all are CM as their preferred position. Which of the three was not playing CM? Was one of them playing on the wing?

by exSlacker on Feb 7, 2012 8:49 AM PST reply actions

If I had to hazard a guess it'd be Carrasco

since he saw a bit of time on the wing last season at least once that I remember and from the quick look you get of his goal on the video, it seems like he was making a run into the box from the wing.
