On the Eve of the one of Seattle's Most beloved and well known team's 100th match. I look back at where we started in our humble beginnings in the 70's to where we are now. We have the best MLS team in America's greatest yet almost invisible city. The Emerald City. The Jewel of the Puget Sound. Soccer City USA.
What does it mean to be a Sounder. Some of us, like me are born sounders. A good chunk of us come from the far reaches of the globe and settle here. Either way you slice the cake, a Sounder none the less. Kids are being rased now from birth hearing the names Montero, Keller, Schmidt. Being taught what loyalty is. What supporting something/someone to the bitter end is. Sounders embody the family vibe. Always caring about a fellow human. Loyal to a fault. Blue and Green to the core.
We all share a common rally cry. The "SEATTLE SOUNDERS" chant still brings chills to my spine even after 100 games. No where else in America do 38,000 plus meet up and in unison cheer a team on to victory. Soccer Is about unity and that is what we have hear in Seattle. We have been here four years and have already changed the opinions of thousands upon thousands of people and their views of soccer. It is bringing the city and the Puget sound region together like no other.
People outside of the region look at the Sounders and what we are doing. They are jealous, envious and curious at the same time. Jealous because only 15,000 or so fans so up to their games. Envious of the every growing attendance0 numbers and atmosphere. Curious on what is like to be in the middle of what the rest of the world has experienced for decades now. They talk about how in awe they are of the sea of "rave green" in the stands even when the worlds largest clubs our playing our boys. They talk about coming to watch games here. People whether they want to admit it, want to be sounders. They want to feel the love we do. But if you ask any ECS member or any fan in general of the team what they think about the hate, jealousy, I think they would say, "I am a Sounder...All blue and green." and "NO ONE LIKES US, WE DON'T CARE, WE ARE SOUNDERS MIGHTY SOUNDERS."
I am proud to call myself not only a Sounders fan. I am proud to call myself a true Sounder. I am part of something bigger then anything I have ever experienced. I am part of a large and ever growing family. I am a "Sounder Till I Die"
