Steve Kelley's article in the Seattle Times

sounds like the critique of somebody who has grown up on American Football, is smart enough to get some soccer lingo, but lacks any understanding of the game. Hustle, work-rate, and physicality are aspects of an individual's or team's game that easy to deride.

These comments seem to me to be a reflection of lack of understanding of what it takes to be successful. "Try harder", "run faster", "don't give up", "keep your chin up", "don't let them push you around"...
