As the Seattle Sounders took their long journey to Trinidad to continue their quest for the 2012-13 CONCACAF Champions League title they will be doing it in a small stadium with high humidity, low 80s and partly cloudy weather. They are in foreign lands, nearly as far away as they can be from Seattle as can be in competitive matches. They don't go into these circumstances blind. They've played Caledonia AIA once already. There should be lessons from that.
Seattle already leads the Group and can effectively eliminate Caledonia with a blow-out win. While Sigi Schmid is likely to use a reduced side, that should not worry Sounders fans. Those "lighter" lineups are quite strong in non-MLS play in 2012. In those 8 matches they are 6-1-1 +11. Sammy Ochoa and Andy Rose each have four goals, while Alonso and Montero each have three in non-league matches. Rose, Montero and T&T native Cordell Cato all have three assists outside of MLS.
There may be a cushion for the Sounders due to the quality, but seeding in the knockout rounds is determined first by points earned in Groups and then by Goal Differential. There is an incentive to running up the score as it should help Seattle avoid a Liga MX side next winter.
The broadcast is on FoxSoccer at 5:00 PM Pacific.
