It seems like only yesterday that we were tracking the postseason progress of the 2011-12 Academy teams, but this weekend the third ever Seattle Sounders Academy season kicked off as the U18s and U16s traveled south to play the Chivas USA and LA Galaxy academies. The results hinted that there might be a lot of goals on tap for the teams this year as there were 20 goals scored in the 4 games, with the U16s playing to two 2-2 draws and the U18s picking up a 3-3 draw and a 2-4 loss. No wins isn't ideal, but three draws on the road in pretty miserably hot conditions isn't a bad result either.
The U18 team this season is predictably made up mostly of U16 players and some returning younger players from last season's U18 campaign. But some new players were involved as well, including a substitute goal each from Crossfire transplant Nick Nguyen and University Place's Kenny Sweet.
After the opening weekend the Academy goes idle for a couple of weeks before picking the season back up again in the September 22 home opener at Starfire, which happens to be against the first incarnation of the Portland Timbers Academy. I'm sure the Academy kids would appreciating Sounders fans bringing a little of the Cascadia rivalry flavor to their first home match.
