Throughout the season the mood towards Sigi has been a roller coaster ride. After the first stretch of games everyone was ready to can him. Big run through the middle of the season and he is coach of the year material. And now a 4 game losing streak and arguably the worst form the Sounders have been in ever. Twitter and here at Sounder at Heart everyone (at least everyone who speaks up) seems ready to fire Sigi again.
While we all speculate who could replace Sigi, I think we need to look at Sigi's body of work and realize not only is he the best man for the job but there's no reason to fire him now.
5 straight years of the playoffs and 3 open cups (4 finals). I get it, we collapsed and backed into the playoffs. But it's still the playoffs and records don't matter once we get into them. 5th or 1st, you still are in and still have to do the same thing, win. The best team over 2 legs advances and while we haven't had great success in the playoffs. Sigi has proven success in the playoffs, 2002 in LA and 2008 in Columbus. Sigi is a proven coach and 1 poor set of games, even if it is late in the season, is not a reason to fire him. This seasons playoffs are important and we need to win in them. This stretch of games shouldn't be the decider but how the team fights in the playoffs.
This years playoffs are huge for the team, especially with no silverware last year or this year (so far). We really need to take a look at how strong a team we have and how strong of a coach we have. Firing Sigi before or after the playoffs isn't going to help this squad. Some consistency will. In Sigi I Trust and I am proud of it.
