From our own perceptions, which are highly individualized, we create speculations. Most people view these speculations as fact from their personal experiences. This does not cause them to be any more or less factual to that individual but can create great variances in response when shared with others. Now, take this idea and throw it into the world of social media. We do not have the benefit of visual, i.e. body language or facial expressions, or auditory, i.e. tone and pitch of voice, cues that we use in our typical perceptions. When you take away two of our most basic senses for interpreting the world around us, we are actually quite lost and need context to form our perception. What does any of this have to do with the Sounders?
Take the Tweets from yesterday regarding EJ, Sigi and practice. We did not actually witness the practice on Tuesday during which Eddie apparently became angry. We were not privy to the conversation between Sigi and EJ regarding the practice yesterday. Most people therefore used the context of the current, for lack of a better term, poor form of the team. No one, save EJ and Sigi truly know the actual reasons behind any of this. Does Tuesday have anything to do with Wednesday? We do not know. I do know that EJ posted quotes on his Instagram account, I do not know the motivation. I do know that he also posted a photo last night of him with several other Sounders "hanging out" together. I was not aware that there was no practice today, and as such, my husband and I went to Starfire. We did not see many Sounders, excepting for two. Shalrie and Eddie were on the bikes in the fitness room. I do not believe that we have seen the last of either of them, but that is my speculation.
I have to admit that being from Boston I am still a Patriots fan. One of my favorite players, until several months ago, was Aaron Hernandez. We all know the type of person that he has shown himself to be. I guess that at this point in my life, I have chosen that the behavior of athletes, as long as it does not cause direct harm to another individual and if they are performing their roles, is not my concern. What is my concern at this time is the Sounders. We seem to be at a crossroads. I can only feel that our recent loss of production has a root and I personally cannot determine what it is. I wish that I could convince myself that it is EJ or Sigi, because that would make it an easy correction with an obvious scapegoat, but I cannot.
I can only hope that the Sounders themselves have begun to figure it out and have a plan in place to rally themselves back into the team we all know they can be. I am firmly in the camp that a crowd of 55,000+ vocally supportive fans can only help them in their fight. I feel as though I swore an oath when I first chanted "I am Sounders til I Die" and I promise to lose my voice on Sunday night.
