Sure the Sounders our off to their worst start in franchise history. Having only gotten 2 points in five league games. Yes in terms of points were the worst team in the MLS, but Sigi Schmid is still one of the best if not the best head coach in the MLS.
Over the first four seasons the club has posted a 44-24-26 W-L-T record with him as our head coach. That's nearly a 50% win percentage. He also led us to four consecutive playoff titles, 3 consecutive US Open Cups, and 2 consecutive Champions League knockoff round berths. Yes we haven't won the MLS Cup, something Sigi was able to accomplish with both of his previous two clubs. However, that reason alone and the poor start to the fifth season doesn't automatically warrant firing.
Do I agree with all the coaching decisions Sigi has made? No. Do I support everyone of those decisions? 100%. I'm not a coach.
As a lot of other fans have mentioned this season is far from over. There is still plenty of time to turn things around, make the MLS playoffs and possibly win the 2013 MLS Cup. Even if that doesn't happen and we end up with a losing record does that mean Sigi needs to be fired? No. Firing Sigi at the end of the 2013 season would mean we would need to find a replacement. I would challenge anyone to come up with a better coach to be a replacement (And I don't think Jose Mourinho is one of those options).
Sigi has a contract with this team through the 2015 season. If this team struggles through two losing seasons then yes definitely consider firing him. Although after that much trouble Sigi would hopefully want to consider retiring.
Some of what I wrote is hypothetical and hopefully won't happen. This season has gotten off to a slow start and a lot of fans need someone to vent at. Well don't vent it at Sigi because he's been an awesome coach!
Sigi Sigi Sigi! O O O! Sigi Sigi Sigi! O O O!
