We all have a few of those sports memories. Where you remember exactly where you were, who you were with, what happened, what you felt.
June 23, 2010 is one of those days for me. I realize it's not that long ago, but with a moment as special as this I think we can all agree it doesn't matter.
The US was in a dire situation. After drawing the first two games of the group stage the boys in red, white and blue (mostly white) were in a must win game against Algeria.
I woke up early that day, at about 5 a.m., to make breakfast for my friends that came over. We all wore our matching blue jerseys and settled in for a game we were all just hoping would turn out in our favor.
After a few missed chances, some close calls and a little controversy (when is there not controversy I ask you!?) it looked dire. It was the 90th minute and the score was still 0-0.
Tim Howard released a ball forward to Donovan. He carried it forward. It was the last chance and everyone I was with knew it. As we sat on the edge of our seats he sprung the ball forward to the right. The ball was centered and Dempsey...missed.
He was right there and he missed the last chance! It's over!
Wait, who is this guy running on frame?
No. It can't be. IT IS!
Donovan! He slots it left! IT'S IN! IT'S IN!
He did it. He scored and surely that finishes it!
(Don't ask why there is a lobsterdog...it was the first GIF I found!)
We tackled each other like the players on TV.
We were through to the next round! And the make things even better, we were first in the group and avoided playing powerhouse Germany in the next round.
I don't know if I will ever witness a more dramatic finish than that game. It didn't matter to me that we lost out in the next game (ok, maybe a little) because I was part of that. Watching the reaction videos on youtube, and rewatching them again while writing this just bring back the memories of what it felt like. How special that moment is.
Donovan will forever be the guy that I hate always, except when he puts on the USA shirt.
