Young Seattle native DeAndre Yedlin put in his 10,000 hours and 2013 is paying off for the Home Grown Player as he became the regular starter for Seattle Sounders FC, the U-20 US World Cup squad and now is an MLS All Star. He will compete with Tony Beltran of RSL for time against AS Roma during the July 31st match.
"I never really expected any of this," Yedlin told the gathered Seattle media shortly after finding out about the honor. "Of course I wanted it, but I never expected it. To come in and be able to make the strides that I've made and eventually achieve a spot on the All Star team it is amazing and humbling. There's still things I need to work on and I'm going to continue to do that."
This year must be a dream, exceeding all expectations. Coming from this place that is North by Northwest he looks up to the professionals on his team while leading those that will follow.
"I try to communicate with them [the Academy guys] as much as possible. I know when I was on the Academy I communicated with Steve and that was a big help for me to not only get his advice and help, but just to know that there was a guy that cared about me and was in a position I eventually wanted to be in," Yedlin said. "I try to make as much contact with them as much as possible, especially with Jordan Morris, Kovar and the guys who I've had a pretty tight connection with in past years."
DeAndre will keep marching. The All Star game was not the goal for the year. He said that he looks to the upcoming home stand as a chance for some points. Then there will be the festivities in Kansas City against a team that he only really knows by playing EA's FIFA on XBox.
