The Sounders vs Columbus game got underway after over an hour long delay, and it ended in a 1-0 win for the Sounders.
The Crew came out strong early, with a few good chances in the opening few minutes. A breakaway in the 6th minute gave Columbus a 1 on 1 chance on goal, but Leo Gonzalez took Ryan Finley down and got sent off for the challenge. In my opinion, I don't exactly think that the challenge was worth the red card that early in the game, but that's just me.
Columbus continued to hammer chances at Gspurning, but only got a couple shots on goal.
In the 14th minute, the Sounders we're awarded a free kick in Columbus's half. Mauro stepped up, and gave a service into the box that was eerily similar to the one against Portland just a week ago. Eddie Johnson jumped up, bleached hair and all, heading the ball off his glorious (hideous) mane into the back of the net, putting the Sounders up 1-0 down a man.
Columbus would continue attacking the Sounders goal for the remaining 75 minutes, but could not put one into the back of the net. Columbus had 24 total shots, but only 3 of those were on target. Columbus arguably played a much better game than the Sounders, but could not score. This was probably due to not having leading goal scoring and creative attacker Federico Higuain.
I think the biggest story line are the Sounders injuries. Brad Evans came off in the 19th minute due to a calf injury. Adding Evans to the injury list with Shalrie Joseph, Obafemi Martins and Steve Zakuani. Brad Evans is one of Seattle's most consistent players, being a big player in the powerful Seattle midfield.
The Sounders will face Chivas USA, the MLS's second worse team. The Sounders will be missing Brad Evans, Clint Dempsey, and Eddie Johnson to World Cup qualifying, and now they will miss Leo Gonzalez due to red card suspension. Chivas USA is a worse team than Columbus, but the lineup won't be as strong as it was tonight's.
Hopefully Obafemi Martins can return, seeing that he netted a goal at Chivas earlier in the season. Maybe give new signing Blair Gavin a start, or Phillip Lund, a midfielder who shined in the preseason. Maybe slot Marc Burch back into his original left back spot? All those questions will be answered on Wednesday when Chivas comes to CenturyLink.
Wednesday is also the day I start school. So maybe I can get a win on my first day and the Sounders can get a win (and Martins can score) against Chivas? Who knows!
