Dempsey's move to SSFC seals the deal for me, and probably hundreds, if not thousands, of others.
BANDWAGON FAN ALERT, said someone who doesn't know me. Look, I'm from a pro soccer wasteland - Kentucky. The only thing anyone in Kentucky really cares about is college basketball and football, and I'm a dyed-in-the-wool UK fan. Soccer-wise, I've followed the USMNT for a long time, but didn't really watch the pro game much until my second son was born in November and decided he wanted to be awake in the middle of the night for hours at a time when the only thing on TV is, you guessed it, soccer. So I started following Tottenham Hotspur, largely due to Dempsey via Matt Ufford, and am and will remain a big fan of the lilywhites.
Starting just before the Gold Cup this summer, I decided I should follow MLS, too, but couldn't decide on a club to follow - I have a strong distaste for all things Ohio (sans Cincinnati) and the Fire aren't much fun to watch or follow on the internets. My first real taste of MLS soccer was watching the Sounders' CCL match against Tigres (I think, anyway), which was awesome, and then I think I caught the first SEA/POR game in Portland, which was also fun. Yes, I know, Seattle lost. But that kind of made my decision a tough one: Seattle or Portland? I'm from a smaller city, Louisville, that often gets compared to Portland; I like a lot of their players, and I like Caleb Porter. But I've been to Seattle a few times, have a buddy who lives there, and am a fan of the SSFC roster as well. I recognize the regional enmity, but those were my choices.
Dempsey ended up making it for me. He goes to one of my favorite teams in MLS, they're my go-to from here on out. Count on my support from soccer's netherlands, the Ohio Valley. Let's go Sounders.
