Whom to Root For: Week 29

Let's go over some numbers.

1.77. That's the current Points per Match (PPM) of the Seattle Sounders after their win at home against the Chicago Fire, which is the best rate in MLS. But you probably already knew that.

46. That's the current amount of points the Sounders have amassed in MLS play, good for 2nd overall and 2nd in the Western Conference. But you probably already knew that.

48. That's the current amount of points Real Salt Lake have after 28 matches played, good for best in MLS. The Sounders only have played 26 matches. But you probably already knew that.

1. That's how many days remain until Real Salt Lake come to Seattle to play a match which could decide the fate of the Supporter's Shield, a CONCACAF Champions league berth and home-field advantage for the MLS Cup final. I hope you already knew that.

But what about the other matches? While the Sounders are in full control of their playoff and Shield destiny, a little help from our "friends" would go a long way to sewing up some silverware. Which results would prove most favorable to Seattle? Let's look.

Montreal vs. Columbus (9/14 - 11AM PST)

Standing at 45 points in 26 matches (1.73 PPM), Montreal is the next biggest threat to Seattle's Shield chances. At 32 points (1.14 PPM) Columbus poses no such threat. Unfortunately, banking on a team with 14 losses to beat a much better team on the road is a tough break. However, we're interested in the desired result here, not necessarily the likely result.

The Sounders want: A Columbus win.

DC United vs. LA Galaxy (9/14 - 1PM PST)

The Galaxy are nipping right at our heels in the West, sitting just 3 points back (1.59 PPM) of the Sounders. DC United, on the other hand (0.52 PPM), are attempting to stave off the single-season futility record in the post-shootout era of MLS, which is held by the defunct Tampa Bay Mutiny (0.518 PPM in 2001). At least they're at home, so there's a least a chance they ride home-field advantage to 3 points.

The Sounders want: A DC United win.

New York RedBulls vs. Toronto FC (9/14 - 4PM PST)

New York is another team which, while behind Seattle in both points (45) and PPM (1.61 PPM), is attempting to make their move on the Supporter's Shield. Their road is tougher, with two fewer matches to play than Seattle (or Montreal) but not because they have to play Toronto (0.82 PPM). Toronto continues to do Toronto things. That's all you really need to know. Sigh.

The Sounders want: A Toronto FC win.

Philadelphia Union vs. Houston Dynamo (9/14 - 4:30PM PST)

While this match may interest Eastern conference teams and their fans, the Sounders won't need to pay much attention to this match. Neither Philadelphia (1.39 PPM) nor Houston (1.37 PPM) is any real threat to the Sounders' Shield hopes. Maybe root for a revenge loss for the Dynamo, I guess. Lacking that interest, pull for a draw.

The Sounders want: A draw.

Chicago Fire vs. New England Revolution (9/14 - 5:30PM PST)

The Fire seem hell-bent on dropping as many points as possible lately, which is fine by the Sounders. This is another Eastern conference match with playoff implications, but not necessarily Shield implications. With the Fire at 1.33 PPM and the Revs at 1.37, you can root for the Fire to lose then fire their PR guy, or just squander more points in a home draw.

The Sounders want: A draw.

Colorado Rapids vs. FC Dallas (9/14 - 6PM PST)

I don't know what all the fuss is about the Rapids. They don't particularly impress me but the power-rankers-that-be at MLS and several others place them ahead of the Sounders, even though Seattle has 2 games in hand, is ahead on points and in much better form. At 42 points (1.5 PPM) they have an outside shot at the Shield and will probably make the playoffs as the 5 seed, but Dallas can go a long way toward spoiling that. A Dallas win all but ends Colorado's Shield dreams but doesn't resuscitate Dallas' chances too much.

The Sounders want: An FC Dallas win.

Chivas USA vs. Portland Timbers (9/14 - 7:30PM PST)

The more you tighten your grip, Porter, the more points will slip through your fingers.

The Sounders want: A Chivas USA win.

San Jose Earthquakes vs. Vancouver Whitecaps FC (9/14 - 7:30PM PST)

Both teams are tied in the Western Conference table on points (37) but it's Vancouver that enjoys the slight lead in the Shield race (1.37 PPM to 1.32 PPM). The side that loses this match will most likely see their playoff chances evaporate, as both are 5 points under the magical red line. I would love to see a Portland-Vancouver one-off in the playoff opener, with the winner advancing to take on the Sounders...and I hope you would too. Make it so, ‘Caps (if you can).

The Sounders want: A Vancouver win.

On a bye: Sporting Kansas City (45 points, 1.61 PPM)

Seattle Sounders FC vs. Real Salt Lake (9/13 - 7:00PM PST)

If you have to wonder what result the Sounders want, you're at the wrong part of the internet, my friend.

The Sounders want: A Sounders FC win.

The Aftermath

If all of these results go the Sounders way as outlined above, the Supporter's Shield table would look like this:
