Obafemi Martins is back. The Seattle Sounders forward was named to the starting lineup for the game against the Chicago Fire on Saturday, marking his first appearance since suffering an ankle injury against Toronto FC on Aug. 10. Martins had been questionable all week, but was apparently deemed fit enough to play.
The return of Martins comes just as the Sounders enter what has to be considered one of the toughest portions of their schedule. After the game against the Fire, a team that has gone 4-1-2 in its past seven, the Sounders finish the season with eight games against teams in playoff positions.
Martins' presence should come in especially handy against the Fire, as the Sounders were already without Eddie Johnson and Clint Dempsey, who were both with the United States national team for World Cup qualifiers. Martins is tied for the team lead with seven goals in just 1,025 minutes. He also has three assists.
