23-year-old defender most recently played for Germany's FCR 2001 Duisburg after previously with the Boston Breakers.
After originally saying they weren't planning to use their fifth free agent spot, the Seattle Reign announced the signing of defender Elli Reed. The 23-year-old was the No. 8 overall pick in the 2011 WPS Draft, played that season with the Boston Breakers and spent last year with FCR 2001 Duisburg of the Bundesliga.
"I am extremely excited about this opportunity to play for Seattle Reign FC," Reed said in a team release. "I am looking forward to learning from the experienced coaching staff and to play alongside the talented players that the club has already signed. Seattle is a city that has become known around the country for its soccer culture and I cannot wait to represent Seattle in the NWSL."
Reed was a standout in college with the University of Portland and played for various United States youth teams, including the team that won the 2008 U-20 World Cup.
