There can no longer be doubt, Fredy Montero is officially a player with Millonarios in Colombia, joining them on a one year loan. In a surprising turn of events he and Seattle Sounders FC reached an agreement on a multi-year extension.
Fredy Montero will spend 2013 with Millonarios, the Colombian league champions, on loan for the year from Seattle Sounders FC the team announced via press release Monday morning. A new twist to the long saga emerged as the team announced it reached a multi-year contract extension with Montero as well. Previous indications were that his contract was through 2014.
"Fredy has been a fantastic player and pro for Sounders FC over our first four years," said Owner and General Manager Adrian Hanauer via the release. "We wish Fredy the best of success with Millonarios as he continues to develop as a player. We hope this move helps Fredy's chances of being called up to the Colombian National Team, as he has certainly earned it."
Montero is already in preseason with his new team.
Major League Soccer's winter transfer window is now open, which should facilitate the Sounders' search to replace Montero. He is the team's leading scorer and assist man, and the league's third leading scorer over his four yeas in MLS.
Seattle only has two Designated Players at this time.
