Nigerian website builds on on earlier report by Steven Goff regarding Sounders' pursuit of Martins.
The global stage of soccer means that rumors come from every where, in this case a report out of Obafemi Martins' home nation of Nigeria where one notable line from Tuesday's story particularly stands out.
But a source in the club confirmed the Sounders are taking a move for Martins very seriously
Seattle Sounders FC is currently not the leakiest of MLS sides so this one line is significant. There are, of course, reasons to doubt any rumor, but Martins fits many of the things that the Front Office has indicated they want in a player - international appearances, success in significant European leagues (five cups) and success in international club competition (1 cup).
In fact Martins is almost certain to play in today's Europa League match between Levante and Olympiakos Piraeus (Noon if you are searching for some action). He scored in Levante's first leg 3-0 win last week.
Martins' breakout year was back in 2004-05 with Inter Milan, when he scored 22 all-competition goals in 45 appearances. Three more seasons of at least 10 goals immediately followed, but he has not reached that mark since 2007-08 with Newcastle. Now healthy, he's on pace for that again as he has eight goals in 23 matches with Levante. Over his career, he scores in about a third of the matches he plays, regardless of it being league, cup or international tournament. Much of this is due to injury.
