Cordell Cato on trial with San Jose, teams discussing possible deal

Cato is wearing pennies for another squad now as he is on trial with San Jose - Chris Coulter - SoundersPhotos.com

During the match between the San Jose Earthquakes and Chicago Fire a surprising second former Sounder took the pitch in the second half - Cordell Cato.

The San Jose Earthquakes currently have Cordell Cato in camp as a guest player/trialist/invitee/pick your word while the 'Quakes and Seattle Sounders FC discuss a possible trade according to Frank Stranzl, San Jose media relations and 'digital dude.'

Cato wore the number 10 and played right mid in the second half of the match (the Fire won 1-nil). His future with Seattle came in doubt when poor offseason communication led Seattle to go in other directions. Sigi Schmid said Cato was not expected back with Seattle.

The Sounders do still control his rights, but a trade sending Cato away would likely not gain the Sounders much. For perspective the other former Sounder on the pitch for San Jose was Mike Fucito, recently acquired for a second round draft pick. Still, getting something for a player no longer part of the future is a gain.
