Sounders on to US Open Cup, Injury Update

New, comments

Kevin Forest scored the loan goal and Kasey Keller picked up the shut out as the Sounders defeated Colorado 1-0 to move on to the Lamar Hunt Open Cup tournament. Sigi Schmid never made the tournament in 3 years as coach of the Columbus Crew. Game summary, stats, photos and video clips are available here.

Injury Update

Freddy Ljunberg is feeling better from his migraines which were apparently caused by wine and cheese. He should be good to go on Saturday. The team reports he has trained the last few days and his fitness is not an issue.

Brad Evans is nursing multiple injuries after a bad collision with goalkeeper Ray Burse. The worst of the knocks is a sprained ankle, but team doctors say Evans could see action this weekend against Columbus.

Taylor Graham has a fracture in his third metatarsal arch and is on his way to Injured Reserve. He will miss at least 6 games due to the injury.

Osvaldo Alonso has a strained lower quadriceps and was ineligible for the game Tuesday against Colorado. He will most likely sit out Saturday as well.

Reaction:
I am glad Freddy is coming back and hopefully he will avoid such foods in the future considering he has had this problem for most of his career.

I imagine we will see Evans get limited time or be used as a sub against Columbus. The most important thing is to get these guys healthy.

Obviously, Alonso is the biggest concern here. Besides Keller, Alonso is the most vital player on our team. You could see on Saturday that he is the cog of the defense and to jump start the attack from defense. No offense to King, who will get the start again on Saturday, but Alonso is an early season MLS MVP candidate.
