One Number Why Seattle Isn't In MLS Cup?

I actually think there is a single number that explains why Seattle isn't in the Cup Final today. It explains many of the dropped points on the year, and it relates to the what went wrong post I wrote for the SBN-Soccer portal.

The number is 10.

In 2009 Seattle was a +5 team in dead ball situations. In 2010 the Sounders were a -5 team. Sure some of that was Penalty related. But dropping Penalties, Seattle would have been +7 and -1 in Dead Ball Goal Difference.

The lack of Nate Jaqua for most of the year hurt the offense and a bit of the defense in those situations. Service in 2010 be it from Freddie Ljungberg and Nathan Sturgis did not match the threats that FL10 and Sebastien Le Toux provided in 2009. Lastly, the defense was in flux quite a bit; 4 different players started at Centerback for the Sounders in many different combinations.

For 2011 a few of those look to be somewhat solved. There will be two target forwards on the team (even if Seattle loses one in Expansion Draft I expect a 2nd to be added). The Centerback situation will likely have 3 guys that are all capable in the air and with lateral speed. Service though? We still wait for that answer.

Below are the Sounders' numbers by MLS category both on offense and defense, as totaled by Climbing the Ladder.
