After tearing it up in the US Soccer Academy League with 6 goals in 12 games, Sounders U-18 Academy forward Sean Okoli spent the last few weeks with the US U-18 national team for a mini-tournament in Tel Aviv, Israel. I couldn't find any reporting out of there, but the match reports on USSoccer.com tell the story of a frustrating tournament for the US and limited action for Okoli.
On the 14th the team played their first match — against France. Sean only came on in the 62nd minute after France had already taken a 2-0 lead and the French would score once more to finish the game at 3-0. On the 16th the team played their second match against hosts Israel and Sean was an unused substitute as the team played to a 0-0 draw. The final game was on Friday versus Germany, and Sean started this match but was subbed out in the 54th minute with the game still 0-0. The US would go on to score their first and only goal of the tournament in the 62nd but Germany answered back with 2 and won the match 2-1 after outshooting the US 20-3.
So all told a less than impressive showing by the youth team and only 82 minutes on the pitch for Okoli. Hopefully he can get back in stride once the Academy season starts up again in mid January.
