Hate to be the bearer of bad news, although this seems to be what many suspected, but Seattle Sounders General Manager Adrian Hanauer just released this statement: "We have watched and admired the play of Diego Forlan for a number of years, and we would be thrilled to have a player of his quality join Sounders FC. However, there is no substance to these current reports that Sounders FC is negotiating with Atletico Madrid and the player, to bring him to Seattle."
I suppose we can parse these words anyway we want, point out that Hanauer is only denying that the team is currently negotiating with Forlan, but the end result is really the same: Don't expect to see the Atletico Madrid striker in Rave Green anytime soon. This probably doesn't come as much of a shock to anyone, as most people seem to have assumed this was a pretty longshot.
But, as Dave said earlier, just the fact that a Seattle team is linked with positive rumors with this kind of player is a step in the right direction. Hopefully, the Sounders are being linked to players like Forlan because they have a real chance of landing one of these guys at some point. In any case, it was a fun rumor and has definitely drawn a fair amount of traffic here. So thanks for that.
