Wednesday night's CONCACAF Champions League match starts at 7 PM at CenturyLink Field. The Seattle Sounders FC faithful will host CD Marathon in a likely small crowd in a match that is marginally important. Neither side is expected to field a full strength lineup.
For Sigi Schmid and the Sounders this means resting some of their tired legs from playing the second most matches in 2012. It will also mean the return of Marcus Hahnemann to competitive play as a Sounder. Marathon is now a good team in their league, but this long distance game can only serve to slow down their momentum as they push for the league title.
In the two clubs previous three meetings Seattle holds a 2-1-0 +2 GD record against Marathon. In Champions League action as Sounders FC the team is 10-9-3 -3 GD. Throwing in the 1996 Champions Cup shifts that record to 11-12-3 -9.
For the Sounders to take the first seed in the Championship Round of the 2012-13 CONCACAF Champions League they would need to outscore Marathon by 11 goals. A win assures them of the third seed. That would mean that they would avoid Marathon and likely Santos Laguna (plays Toronto at 5 PM) until much later in the tourney.
