After signing three huge names in the past few weeks, the Sounders Women announced their season ticket package. The package includes three friendlies and seven league games. Due to national team demands, the US Women's National team players "will be available for 6-7 of the 10 home matches between April and July." The Olympics do not directly overlap the season, but there are other national team commitments as well. All home games will be at Starfire, including the friendlies against Seattle Pacific University, Seattle University and the University of Washington. Per the team website:
Sounders Women 10 match season ticket packages are available now starting at $120.00 for General Admission Bleacher seating and $140.00 for covered General Admission Grandstand seating. Season ticket holders receive $3.00 off the price of a Sounders Women’s scarf. We encourage fans to purchase tickets early as we anticipate sellout attendance at the 4,500 seat Starfire Sports Complex Stadium.
The schedule and the limited contracts of the famous players offer a challenge for fans. These season tickets are a great value for matches that will have great talent at times. Other former WPS players are likely to be signed as well. One will need to decide if they are supporting women's soccer or if they are supporting three famous players.
Carrying the Sounders brand, and with the limited services of Hope Solo, Alex Morgan and Sydney Leroux, this will be one of the most supported teams in American women's soccer. Some of those supporters will be disappointed when the names they recognize won't be available.
That would be a shame. In a year of dramatic flux for the women's game in the United States, support for this team should help point a kind of way forward for whatever system exists in 2013. Without a significant women's league for an extended period of time, the National Team will be less dominant than it has been in the past.
Still, this isn't a call for charity. Successful sports need successful business models. Similar to an MLS team stacked with USMNT talent, the Sounders Women will have a few key players absent for a stretch of games. If Fredy Montero were to be called up and unavailable because he was called up by Colombia that would be a signal of team success not a reason for complaints.
Similar to Seattle Sounders FC, the ambition for the Sounders Women is very simple -- win things and shock American soccer with unprecedented support. They've laid a strong foundation.
