The U23 version of the Cascadia Cup got off to a nice start as the Sounders U23s beat their Vancouver Whitecaps counterparts 2-1 on Friday. Sounders Academy products Darwin Jones and Troy Peterson hooked up on the first goal, while UCLA product Fernando Monge finished off the scoring with a 51st minute tally.
The Sounders opened the scoring when Peterson was able to chip the ball over the Vancouver defense and put Jones through on a breakaway, who was able to sidestep the goalkeeper and score his first goal. They doubled their lead when Monge deflected a pass from former Timbers U23 player Luis Esteves.
Among the players to start for the Whitecaps were several from their MLS roster. Michael Boxall, Caleb Clarke and Russell Teibert all started. Clarke even provided the Whitecaps their lone goal, scoring in the 53rd minute. They were coming off a 3-0 win over the Kitsap Pumas in their season opener.
