UPDATE: It appears that, contrary to my assumptions, Ashley Cole, John Terry, Florent Malouda, Raul Meireles and Fernando Torres will almost certainly NOT be playing against the Sounders. All five competed in the European Championship and are being given some time to recover before joining the team later in the tour.
Waylaying some fears, it appears that Chelsea has brought what amounts to a first team on their summer friendly tour, which kicks off on Wednesday against the Seattle Sounders. Chelsea will arrive in Seattle on Saturday, but has not yet formalized an intinerary.
Among the players that will be making the trip are 10 players that started in either the UEFA Champions League title game or semifinal. Names like goalkeeper Peter Cech; defenders Ashley Cole, John Terry, David Luiz and Gary Cahill; midfielders Michael Essien, Ramires, Flourent Malouda, Frank Lampard and John Mikel Obi; and forward Fernando Torres. Chelsea's two newest signings, Eden Hazard and Marko Marin, will also be on the roster. The availability of Cole, Terry, Malouda, Raul Meireles and Torres for the Sounders game is unclear, as they are not flying over with the rest of their teammates on Saturday.
The most notable exception is probably Juan Mata, who has been given a leave until September. Mata has already competed in the English Premier League, UEFA Champions League, European Championship with Spain and is scheduled to appear in the Olympics. Otherwise, the missing players from the Champions League winners have already left the team or have signaled their intention to leave.
At last report, about 49,000 tickets had been sold for the game, meaning plenty are still available. Sounder at Heart is also holding a contest to win two pairs, which you can still enter. Full roster after the jump:
